Less than 24 hours after buying the bike I'm already browsing for goodies! (It's raining!) Can't get anything just yet so planning for the future. ;o) I read on here everyone raving about Termi's - what is it that's so good about them? I imagine they sound amazing, but do they alter the performance by much? If I were to go down that road, surely a full system is much better than the slip ons? Are slip ons a false economy? I've also seen that a lot recommend getting the suspension set up professionally. After less than a hundred miles so far, I can't imagine the bike handling much better than it does already so I'm reluctant to pay someone to alter it. Is it worth setting everything back to factory and fiddling with it myself? I can't get out for a ride today (no matter cos it's raining anyway!) but I think I'm going to be spending as much time as possible just sitting in the garage and looking at it! D
Termis are mostly sound, maybe add a HP or two. But the bike will feel a whole lot better/freed up. I think the bikes sound sh!t with the std cans. You will also need an ecu reflash. I'd recommend reading, Motorcycle Suspension Setup Start with sag. Note yr original settings. If your 848 is as factory it's probably way too hard, unless you like you pies!
I regret not getting Termigs with mine from new and putting down a bit more for the bike. Now I'm in the position where they come up on eBay without the ECU to match, or they are for a pre-10 (which has different spring mountings) and just find that if I went and spent £1100-1400 on a new set, for that I could have a full suspension rebuild/spring oil etc and a new set of top of the range tyres and a few other 'usability' bits that would make a bigger difference. I agree though that the standard pipes are a little 'dull' I'm thinking of getting Akropovics for mine, they are still expensive but tbh I think they are better built and the slightly smaller exit and longer cans may well be a titch quieter.
Akros are better, lighter and nicer made ;-) Nothing wrong with std cans tho, they have a unique rasp which I like, but they dont have the bellow of the race cans and are loads heavier and run hotter. Full system offers no real benefit over slip ons V cost If you are going to buy, set some second hand ones and have it mapped at CJS instead of just changing the chip. The before-after map on mine as +8hp and 5 torque but lots extra in midrange Did you get an Evo?
Thanks Nelson - will have a read when I get 5 mins of me time. (I am a liker of pies, but much prefer beer!) I certainly can't afford or justify spending that much right now, but I'm going to start a wish list and prioritise my needs. I quite like the sound of the standard cans at the moment, but I imagine if I hear non standard cans I'll want to upgrade. Do the slip ons need an ECU flash as well? I'll look at Akros too. I got the standard 848. After the test ride I was totally hooked on it. It's my first Ducati and unless I tested them back to back I'd never know what I'm missing!
You can get the "old" style termis for ~ £300-£400. Yes, reflash needed for slip ons. ChrisW on here will flash for you... If it priorities, then I'd look at a suspension set up first, £40-£50 well spent...
It seems easy enough to set suspension up diy style? Knowing what you're doing is obviously key, which I'm not 100% on, but there must be enough info on the internet to do a decent job. At least if a note of current settings is made, it can always be put back again? I'd rather know what's been done so I may just read up on it first.
As long as you note where you started or look up the base setting you can't really go wrong. Adjusting the rear pre-load can be a bit of a mofo on the 848! :Banghead:
My first bike didn't come with cans. And I always said my next bike will defenatly come with. IMO the sound is half of the experience on a ducati, when you give it the beans and then the noise it makes with the over run is just intoxicating! Not much sounds better than a duc being spanked and the termi's singing away! I've got the slash cut style on my 1198s
The slip ons are definetly not false economy, they are getting rid of the cats which are the most restrictive part of the exhaust system, I had my termis fitted at the bikes first service to get a feel of what difference they made and it was like riding home on a different bike it was so much smoother at lower revs and gave a much nicer power delivery. Which cans you choose is up to you, Akra's look great but I went termi because they keep the warranty and with the DP ecu and filter it seemed like a good package.
I don't know if they strictly are road legal because they have no cats but any Ducati dealer would pass it no problem I would of thought. There is a titanium sleeved termi which has the cats in and is road legal but its more expensive and won't give as much benefit.
Long as they dont have not for road use on them (bit of polish and a drill mop ) and yiu have some baffles its fine..
I stick a bit of aluminium foil over the "for race use only" never had a problem.. Or keep your old cans for MOT.
