:Banghead: Well I thought I had resolved this, but no, the error message is back and the bike won't start properly. I don't actually know where the relay is fitted on the bike so that I could check the connections, etc, as the bike does start sometimes, but not repeatedly, as it did last weekend when I fitted the Ultimate Add-ons phone charger case. The bike was sodding fine before I fitted the AO stuff, so what the heck is going on here, does anyone have any ideas?:Nailbiting:
Where did you take off the power for your Add-ons charger? Could it be interfering with the canbus? See my post in the Tech section for the relay location.
Take off the right hand panel below the seats. There is a connector on a metal bracket on the top reattach. Loop tube. Unclipped / slid the connector off the frame tab, and then unclipped the connector. Assuming the exhaust flap is in the one position the bike should. Start just fine, and run fine too. My new bike started to give an exvl error at random times. I have fitted an eliminator ($50 and delivered in a week). No more problems
You're thinking of the exhaust valve John. The ETV relay (Electronic Throttle Valve) supplies power to the ride by wire throttle servos.
I think the ETV relay is located with another couple of relays behind the left hand front side panel just below the tank, same place where the navigation pick up spur is. Is this were you picked up the supply for your ultimate add on device? You may have dislodged a connector on the relay if so...?
Guys, Thanks for the replies and my apologies for taking such a long time to get back to you. I've been having another go at the damn thing, unfortunately to no avail. As to connecting the UA-ons device, I simply took the power leads up behind the side panel and connected back directly onto the battery using the 'hard-wire kit that came with the I-phone case. I suppose I could have slightly dis-lodged something down below the fuel tank, but won't know without taking the panels off to check. It's really confusing because the bike has been starting but only sometimes!!:Bawling:
:Stop: Fingers and everything else crossed..... I believe that this time I just might have solved the ETV thing! I located the ETV relay just behind the wind deflector panel as Boomer suggested. I tugged at the relay and pulled it away from the connection and strangely enough virtually all of the relay connectors were corroded to a greater or slightly lesser extent. A bit of judicious cleaning and lo and behold the Multi fired up 1st time I've since stopped and re-started about 20 times and eureka, it seems to be OK....BUT:Shifty: So this could be the reason and maybe worth bearing in mind if this should happen to anyone else out there in Mutli world. Keep the faith !!:Bawling:
For reference Tony which is the ETV relay? And for reference, the two relays under the left cockpit panel forward of the fuse box are the main beam and dip beam relays ;-)
Andy in the upper photo you have posted it is the centre one of the three that are visible (or the second from the right as you look at the shot) and thanks for the insight into the other relays. I couldn't have described the location well enough in my follow-up post as I didn't mean either of these ones. I was referring to those in your top photo. I hope you got your website stuff sorted out, because it was a pretty big issue for you and of course us, who use your information so frequently, the last time I logged on. Here's hoping for good news :Nailbiting:
mts1200.info - still hoping for the best but progress to date not boding well, despite email exchanges and phone calls the hosting company have yet to come back to me with anything useful :-(
Sounds like you have located the problem, surprised the connections are corroded though..not much water should get up there, unless someone has had a power washer up there before..?
Boomer you are not wrong, but they were pretty bad and even though I do use a power washer myself especially after winter rides, with the salt and all that, I can honestly say, I am very cautious around the electrical bits and pieces! I'm going to check the serial number of the relay, so that I can replace it just to be on the extra safe side. I don't know if anyone knows this information, plus the make, etc, to save me the job? I've spoken to Riders today to ascertain the price and availability and they can get one in 3-4 days and the cost each is £3.31, but I'm pretty sure they should be a relatively 'standard' part, readily available and in all likelihood much cheaper than what I've been quoted, not that it's that much, less than what I quite often pay for a cup of coffee these days!!
TIP: when reassembling any electrical connections I've undone or putting together new wiring I always use a little Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline....yes there's several uses for it! lol) - smear a little on 'male' connectors and use a mini screwdriver or similar to get some into 'female connectors'. Tends to keep water/moisture out and if any does get in prevents corrosion ;-)
According to my parts manual it part #54140101A but you'll have to do a search for it on Google to see if it looks the same.
