The ducati dealer here in sunny manchester told me the belts on later ducati s now only need changing at 15000 miles and not on any time schedule. Can this really be true? Have always had them changed every 2 years on all other ducati s I've owned.
I'm pretty sure the 2 year thing is scaremongering and profit for dealers. I asked people in automotive engine design and they said it was bollocks so I wrote to Ducati and put my case forward asking them to respond to my information - I received no reply.
Things changed after 2006 re the 2 year belt change. The Desmo Service is linked to mileage. However, I still had my belts changed using the old 2 year rule on my 1198S (old habits, eh).
the new models have 15k intervals for belts, but the belts are wider and i understand use a different construction to the older ones. That said, when I bought my Monster, I was told that the service intervals on the '06 and '07 S4Rs' differ, although there are no differences between the part numbers on the bikes. Just Ducati changing their service regimes.
My 848 was 12k OR 2 years whichever sooner. The manual is pretty vague but thats what every dealer told me, and I expect the mutley is the same
You may well be right. I changed the belts on my 996 when I got it as they hadnt been done in 3 years and the old belts looked perfectly fine to me. But the old saying is that its cheaper to replace belts than an engine and so its a "precautionary" measure. I actually remember on one of my old cars, the cambelt should have been changed every 60k miles. I never once changed it and it was still going strong at 175k miles.
Being that I am new to bikes and the Monster is my first I was hoping to get some clear info I have read posts on both sides of the 2 year belt change argument, pros and cons etc etc My bike (M796 2011) has had its 6 month service, its 12 month service then it was serviced at around 28 months rater than 24, it did not get a belt change rather just a regular service, I doubt it'll do any damage as its on 3k miles, BUT looking in the receipts I got I noticed an Italian checklist, which I assume is from the factory, thus it was made about 5 months before first registration. From this I can determine the bike will be 3 years old in June, Now I know it may be silly thinking a belt won't last more than 2 years, but would I be safer off getting it done given the age and the presumption its sat for long periods hence the low mileage? Thanks for any help!
Brilliant, thanks, I thought the same thing myself but wanted to check. Any recommendations on where to buy parts from?
I'll find out more about the belt thing when I pick my bike up from its service (it must be ready by now, surely? But as it's raining all week, I don't care). But my guy over the phone said it was no longer every 2 years. I assume they'll have changed the belts (because I think the last time was 3 years ago).
