Hi folks. Has anyone got a backpack that works with the sort of full size speed hump that you get on most race leathers these days? I've just got myself a new set of leathers and for the first time ever I've gone one-piece but that meant going for ones with a speed hump (which I really don't need). The suit was spot on for fit and so comfortable that I made my peace with the hump, but it looks like it will rule out wearing my trusty Kriega R35 which will be a pain at times meaning I need to re-think my go-to luggage option. Someone I spoke to suggested a Knox Six Pack would work as they have this same issue and that bag works fine with the speed hump on their suit, but having searched the internet this model has been discontinued and replaced with the similar Knox K Pack. Has anyone tried this bag with a race suit on? Or are there any others out there that would work with a speed hump? I need to try it to be certain, but I really can't see the Kriega working with the hump as it sits quite high on my back and there's not a massive range of adjustment in the straps. Thanks in advance for any help on this one. Andy
I recently bought some new leathers which are more sports/racing style (hump + sliders). I didn't even think about the need for pockets when I bought them, but there's just one small inside pocket. I've had to reduce my regular ride out items to a £20 note, a credit card and a phone, and fortunately a 1098 has a small 'boot'. Space is so limited, I think the sliders and hump could be made into useful additional boot space
I wear a back pack on top of my hump, it never really caused me an issue. If the bag is not entirely jam-packed then the hump pushes in to the bag main compartment rather than sitting at an odd angle on the hump.
Yep the bigger Kreiga ones sit well with the speed humps. There is lots of adjustment with the Kriega too, so you can get it 'further back' if needed. My advise would be to test one, ie, wear the suit and pop down to a stockist. Get them to fill the bag with whatever and go and sit on the bike
I tried to post this last night but the forum crashed on me. Logging in at work today (the first attempt was at home) and the post is still here half written... Finding the forum acting very strangely since it was rebranded... Anyway, here's what I wrote. Ok thanks guys. I've not got the leathers home yet but will try it out with the R35 without writing the idea off yet then. I assumed that it was a total no-go given the size of the hump and the size of the bag... I've had the R35 for about 11 years now and it's great but I can work round this issue if it does clash with the hump. I generally don't like putting luggage on the bike if I can avoid it. I can't really explain why, I think I just prefer backpacks so I know it's still there, which sounds weird, but I've used a backpack on my bike since I passed my test and I guess it's just habit / routine now. I've got other options like Kriega tail packs that I can use if it comes to it though. Guess it's just a case of working with what I've got if the speed hump does rule out the use of the R35. Cheers. Andy
Nah you should be fine, most of my leathers during the last few years have had speed humps and my r35 simply gets used without a 2nd thought. You won't tell any difference
I used to use a tailpack on my Zx7r and was always checking to make sure it was still there. The tank bag was better, but that got in the way a bit
I tend to wear a satchel, got a north face one which has a waist strap as well. totally waterproof, used it long distance last year to go to the TT (long distance for me anyway) during the day carried a small laptop, camera bit of grub etc etc....I tend to loosen it off so it rests on the rear seat. Did'nt get in the way too much when caning it over the mountain....nothing would have been better but not practical when youre out all day... Oh, ive got a set of Held one piece leathers with the hump....saying that ive never had a back pack of any sort...let the rear seat do the work....
Having spent time around the circuits and have seen and tried on other racers leathers with the hump to see what benefit they were to me........None really......... ..........then having looked at people with leathers and hump on the public roads, I seriously wonder why someone wants to look like a crippled Quasimodo that has cr*pped themself walking across the filling station forecourt......... The same applies to wearing knee sliders when on the public road...........Whaffor? Although I'm all for armour of some sort, sliders aren't intended to be armour and IMO they only label the rider as a potential wally trying to pretend to be a racer........ I gave my knee sliders away because I no longer used them when racing apart from the one on my bum. Still........everyone to their own...........
I think the hump on 1 piece leathers is par for the course now - I haven't seen any for sale without the hump but then again I don't go looking at race leathers every day. Knee sliders: you don't have to be going fast to get your knee down - IMO theyre extra protection. Ive got mine on, only got my knee down a few times in my life but its nice to learn body position on cornering - the by product of correct body position at a decent lean angle will automatically touch your knee down... I think most peoples perceptions of having knee sliders on the road immediately labels you as a hardcore racer that's a nutter. I would disagree. Ive got an RSV4 factory as well as my hyper. While ive found the top speed at the TT I don't feel the need to do anything like that on the regular roads but do like to "learn to ride" and get the "correct body position" at slower speeds, experimentation if you will... I wouldn't class myself as a hardcore racer/nutter whatever you want to call it but someone that would like to experience greater lean angles but I do see your point as the hump I don't really think is needed...but then saying that it would, in an accident stop your head going back more...
Touche....but, I stand by it...a backpack would just make my back ache....rockin the satchel my friend, rockin the satchel.....
Yeah, I really didn't want a hump but the leathers happen to have one and I kind of had to accept that nearly all leathers do now, even more road biased two-piece sets. Even my old / current Dainese jacket has one of the small quarter-size humps and that's 10 years old. There's no way I need a hump for aero purposes, but I guess it helps with protection maybe? I don't know to be honest. I ordered a smaller Knox K Pack (for what seemed like good value at £40) which looks to be a better shape for the speed hump but will also be more suited to my day-to-day use as the R35 is far too big and cumbersome for my short range commute. If I can make either bag work for longer runs then I'll be delighted.
Sorrry, I had to post that. It's not often I get the idea for a half-decent joke, so I had to take the opportunity. I saw one of those bags in Cotswold a couple of months ago and I was seriously considering buying one for work and bike duties, same as the Knox will do, but wasn't sure how it would sit / feel when on the bike. If I'm no further on with the backpacks once I try this all out then this will be my next port of call. Cheers.
Heh - that's ok - like the banter....not really tried anything else to be honest - the last one I had just fell to pieces...this ones getting a little ropey now....the main job is for going to the TT - its perfect for that...I must say when I get on the ferry I see people with everything bungee'd to their bikes....me and my mate just box up our clothes, stickem on the carriers and send them over ahead...easy, then when we leave - they send'em back....brilliant. We usually send over a slightly empty box and then when we go shopping Round the back of the grandstand that goes in as well....
Aye, that was my fear. I wouldn't expect most non bike-specific bags to put up with use at speed for too long but the likes of a North Face should be ok I would've thought. I'm sure everyone is keen to find out how I get on, so once I get the bag and leathers in the same place I'll post a wee update.
Cool - I would say the only issue ive had is if ive got a lot of weight in there and the waist strap isn't tight then it will loll to one side if ive got a turn of speed on... With regards to durability its been good - ive only just stopped riding my push bike and its been through 4 winters of punishment....its still ok now really a little tatty but otherwise ok and more to the point still waterproof.
I bought a 1 piece suit a few years ago and it has the hump, I also use a Kriega R35 but I take the foam hump out of the suit when using the back pack and stick it back in after. I was never one for the racer look but must confess that I feel really comfortable with the onesie on.
my last leathers (richa) had a hump which on closer inspection was basically foam filled leather stitched in place........so one Stanley blade stitches removed and no hump,my new leathers (alpinestar) has no hump. safety wise I think I read how the hump can get in the road during trauma treatment, and knee sliders protect a nerve which travels down the side of your leg and is very susceptible to damage at exactly the point the slider sits...........this may all be bollox.
I have just bought an Ogio flight vest, I'll admit it does look a bit SWAT Team but I didn't want to use a backpack/rucksack. It also has a hydration pack as well which will come in handy when I'm going to The European Multistrada Meet in the Italian Dolomite mountains. The Flight Vest should be more comfy because your wearing it rather than all the weigh hanging on your shoulders. There is lots of adjustment in the fit around your body so should fit over the hump ok, I saw it originally for £100 but found it online delivered for £70.
