Newbie with a Panigale itch....

  1. Hello all,

    I'm a new(ish) rider (4000 miles since April 2011) from the UK (I say that only because the training seems to be ALOT more comprehensive on crazy roads here than other parts of the world) and I'm currently going thru my IAM (yes, I know...I thought it would be full of Hi-Vis biker stereotypes called Colin aswell, but so far so good)

    Any way, I have currently a Street Triple R and a Tiger 800 for a best of both world combo, but its not enough......

    ....I have a test ride booked this Saturday on a Panigale. Looking for thoughts from you good people;

    I've read reports that it's really well mannered (in the right hands) and capable of all sorts of riding with all sorts of experience (I'll probably have it wet mode permanantly!!)

  4. If you want the IL4-like experience Ducati tried engineering into the Panigale, Honda do the latest 2012 Blade in red - the best colour for it too :smile: It outperforms the Panigale on road (and track) and you can almost get 2 for the price of one 1199S too :wink:

    If you want a race proven, last of the line infamous Trellis framed proper v-twin Ducati, get an 1x98 :upyeah:
     
  5. Having only ridden a 1098 once and not picked up my pani yet Im not in the best place to comment but move with the times. Once all bikes had forks not upside down, most bikes have double sided swing arms. a ducati without a trellis frame is no less a ducati-its the new ducati. but then i would say that:smile: Il let you know what i think once im on it.
    I havent even tested it, just called up and reserved one. Bollocks to it! i go to work to earn money so I can buy things i want. if u want it, get it
     
  6. Have ridden the 1098, 1198, 1199 and the Desmo, think I would take the money and buy the Bayliss rep they have in Riders.

By the way, I am critical of the Pani, but only because IMO they have really missed the target on this first iteration in comparison to the outgoing 1198SP and even earlier 1098R - both were fittingly sexy and excessive top-of-the-range superbikes - just as you'd expect from Ducati. The Pani had so much pre-launch hype with promising new technology, that much greater things were expected than what has been delivered. Hopefully Ducati will make the world right again when they bring out version 2... maybe the 1199R will be a return to form.:smile:

Cant believe anyone with 4,000 miles total experience under their belt in 14 months would seriously consider a Panigale, I am speechless.:eek: Do you really think you have fully explored the potential and performance of your Street Triple R or Tiger? Or put it another way do you think you will be able to stretch the Panigale beyond a fraction of its potential.Sorry if this feels harsh but you did ask.Incidentally I have been riding more than 35 years since the age of 17 and can still manage to occasionally scare the crap out of myself on a 998.

Fair one, cant knock the logic there, I started on a 600, soon wrote it off big time, 2 400`s, 2 750`s a 1000 and now pani so granted working up does mean I dont make the stupid mistakes of the past and Im a lot more capable on a big machine. young it was about pinning the throttle on the straights now its about getting round the corners low and fast that count and I can honestly say its due to working up and testing the limits of each bike that gets that throttle control and knowing when and where and how hard to get the gas on. makes the difference between a fast crazy rider and a fast safe rider. However if I could afford it younger i defo would-and who wouldnt if u could.

  12. Balls! Its your money, if you want one go get one! They only go as fast as your right wrist allows and doing IAM etc means the effort to learn is going in. I wold suggest 2 years training and experience of the right habits trumps 30 years of the wrong habits.

  13. isnt the 1199 now the benchmark of what is sexy and out-going? if not, why have ducati built it? why not just make a 2012/13 model 1198? sorry to say it but 1198 is last sessions kit. dont anyone take it the wrong way but its true. if it were a football shirt and you walked into the club shop, 1198 would be on sale at the back and 1199 would be in the window on full display and that kinda how it is!
    ohh im gonna get some stick for saying that.....but thats how it is lol

    I was looking an S model over at the Goodwood Festival t'other weekend. Very nice, is it £20k nice? Not to me it isn't.
    But it's your money, I've "wasted" tens of thousands of pounds on cars, bikes and other shyte over the years...:tongue:

    Back in the day when I bought my new 748, the 916 was the daddy, not only looks, but on the track.... IMO it has to start winning a few before it can justify the price tag!

    Just my 2p worth...:biggrin:

  15. Nothing wrong with advanced training. Rospa gold over here :upyeah:any further instruction is always a good idea. Im going to arrange an assessment ride with my school. I think all the suggestions about growing into a bike lihe the 1199 are justified. If you really want a Ducati sportsbike, you'll find the 848 far more rewarding, probably just as much as an old zx6r to be honest. You can get a good one of those for under £2k

  16. Of course its his money and if he or anyone else wants to buy a Panigale or anything else for that matter they are lucky enough to be entitled to do so. That is called stating the obvious.
    I do regularly take a training day and advanced asessment, ,unfortunately that dosent actually make you invincible. All I'm saying is that I certainly dont need 190hp to get my thrills and I can't for a second see how someone with a total experience of 4k miles on two wheels can possibly think they can justify buying a Panigale. Just my view which I am entitled to as indeed you are also.
     
  17. Oh, there is no doubt that the Pani is the current superstar in their product range. It debuts lots of new technology, but I get the feeling that Ducati should have done what Kawasaki did in delaying the ZX10R by a year to bring an improved package in light of the competition (S1000RR). Kawasaki delayed the launch, and the ZX10R is a very competitive machine as a result. Whereas the Panigale feels like it needs more work.
     
  18. Ducati is WSB, WSB is Ducati, at the end of this season the Homogalation for the 1*98 series runs out, so they couldn't delay the 1199 release unless they don't run in WSB next season.
     
  19. Just do it. You are clearly confident with your time on the tiger and the street triple. Just take it easy and be patient getting used to the Panigale. Along with the training you'll be fine. As for delaying the launch of the Panigale, there's always issues with the first gen of any bike, BMW have felt the need to tweak the 1000rr and Kawasaki have had issues with the ZX10, even with delaying its release. If you buy the first model you are always going to be a bit of a test mule, as we all know bike models evolve during their production life, I've owned three 916 variants (916bp,916sps and now 998R) and they've all been quite different, not hugely, but Ducati refining and moving things on as required. Will be interesting to see how the 1199 evolves, I'm sure WSBK will drive changes.

  20. TBH, I'm with donkey boy. I think 4000 miles and a year into biking is too little experience to be on something that powerful. Yes, the throttle works both ways, blah blah blah, but if the OP goes out and kills himself, would you still be happy about backing up his decision?

    I would wait for the 899 or whatever it's going to be called. Panigale looks and more than enough power for South East traffic. I went from a 100bhp sportsbike to a 40 bhp supermoto and loved it. You could ride that thing agaist the stop all day, drifting it into corners, backing it in all over the place. I learnt more in two years on the 'moto than I did in five on the 600. Power is not everything.

    Better yet, buy a DD bike for £2k and learn to rag the tits off it around a track.
