Halfords Or Castrol Oil?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Ian, Apr 15, 2014.

  1. I'm about to do an oil change on the Monstro (12 months, 1000 miles) and zzr (15 months, 7500 miles). I'm just wondering if there's any benefit from paying £10 more per bike to use a 'branded' oil as opposed to Halfords (10/40, semi synthetic motorcycle specific oil?
I fear I may have just opened a proverbial can of worms....

  2. the best you can afford.

  3. The logic of 'the best' works and I agree with on my 1198. But on 24 and 21 year old bikes?
Would you say that Castrol IS significantly better than Halfords?

  4. The Halfords oil today is as good as Castrol was 21 years ago ;)

  5. Not an oil expert and, the same as most people, can only give my opinion. I have used Halfords own brand synthetic oil in turbocharged and supercharged cars and in gixxers as well as 919 Monster with no problems at all. In fact, when I was into drag racing I never had an engine failure when using it, purely coincidental maybe but good enough for me.

  6. My understanding and philosophy is that oil is cheap compared to taking engines apart and replacing stuff. So in all vehicles, I never skimp on it. Put in the best you can afford, at the recommended times and forget about it. Having good oil and being nice to your vehicle when cold are about the best things you can do for it.

  7. Glidd's got a very valid point and certainly having chosen the better spec oil on my trusty 140,000 miles diesel Merc estate at service intervals, the old girl returned 45 mpg towing the NC29 and 748R to and from Brands mostly doing 60 (and a bit) and it pulls like a train up to motorway speeds. Gets very breathless at 90 mph but that's old diesels for you. There will be a spec reference in the bumph on the back of the bottle which should give you information to make a comparison. I have used less expensive oil but have always tended to change it and the filter early and my 1995 Subaru Imprezza turbo engine was still good after a lot of miles but as I used to be an enthusiastic driver as a younger man, I did the oil at 3000 miles and again at the 7500 service interval. 8. Years ago both Halfords & Castrol were both owned by the Burmah Group, and Halfords own brand oil was actually Castrol. However these days I believe the Halfords branded oil is supplied by Comma Oils.

  9. I also totally agree with the above comment. You took the words out of my mouth.

  10. I use Shell Advance Ultra. Fully Synthetic. £50 for 2 x 4ltr delivered next day from ebay

  11. Not forgetting halfords oil will be made by a petrochemical giant

  12. Mmmm, ebay - I wonder what that is then - just like the cheap Chanel maybe :(

  13. as long as it is bike specific oil, go for it. Do not use car oil in wet clutch bikes.

  14. I'm ashamed to say I bailed out and went for safe option. Castrol semi synthetic. £30 from Halfords. Hopefully that'll see me through another few 1000 miles and a pair of tyres.

  15. i also agree that buying the best oil you can afford is good economy! don't feel that saving a few quit could be worth the risk. just my opinion.

  16. i agree you get what you pay for
and a good oil serves well in an engine

but have to admit i have put halfords oil in my ss
mainly at the minute as a flushing oil with a new filter
after a few miles new filter and some better oil

but what oil to go for !
do millers oils do a motorcycle oil there car oil was said to be pretty good

  17. cheap oil as a flushing solution, i can understand. makes good sense. :upyeah:

miller oils do some excellent products. my gaffer has a superbike team and they are going to use their oils, the race mechanics rate their products highly.

also, coming from brighouse, west yorkshire... can only be a good thing! :)

  18. If your not using Motul 300V your not using the best oil.

Try it and you will see why its expensive.
