Shall I Put My Original Exhausts On?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by YellowDuc, Apr 22, 2014.

  1. Just wondering if I should put my old exhausts back on? I bought the bike originally with a lovely set of 'For Race Use Only' Termi high level pipes on.

After all the hassle I had with the MOT, even though I have had no issues before, it is making me a little nervous. I have had a few admiring glances from our local constabulary, and I don't think they are just admiring the bike :-(

The other issue I have is, we have moved to a very quite area and the bike tends to start the curtains twitching a little if I have an early start to work, could take the JILF, but it's not the same on a sunny day.

Anyway, would the bike have had the fuel altered in any way do you think when the race pipes were fitted? Also, is the look and sound that drastically different OR am I just being stupid?

With the High pipes, that awful hugger is not as noticeable for sure!!!

I have the original pipes in a box in the garage, so I will have a look to see if they are in good shape. I guess if they are marked or dinted in any way then the Termi's will just have to stay.

Just wondered what anyone's thoughts are. All comments welcome - good or bad :)

    Cheers

  2. Where is the 'Race Use only' marking?

  3. Hi AL

It's on the top ring of the pipe nearest to the frame, so you have to look quite hard to see it !

  4. I'm sure I am in the minority here but I just can't see the attraction of Termi's or any aftermarket louder exhaust pipes, my own preference is to leave it completely standard.

  5. Yes, in a minority I think. At least for the older Ducati models it does seem wrong for them not to release a fair amount of sound. MoT problems and others seem to be a real risk if "not for road use" or similar is a visible marking though. There is also the matter of safety - I am sure that car drivers notice me much sooner when I am on the Ducati.

For Japanese fours, loud exhausts may be another matter, but I was guilty of making plenty of noise with those in my youth...

My guess is that the fitting of the Termis will have been accompanied by fuelling changes, which will need consideration.

  6. Me...........I would drill the rivets out and re-rivet a new plain strap on.........easy peasy.....

  7. +1 to Al's suggestion, or gently , with a fine file, file it away, then bring back up with some wet and dry.. works for me on most cans :)

  8. I try to keep the volume down at home. I kill the ignition and coast the last hundred yards and if I'm out early I start up and accelerate gently up to 30 then coast to the end of the road at tickover. At least your neighbours will see you're being considerate. Never had any problems with the police with noise.

  9. do as al says and also look at repacking the silencers
should bring the decibels down a bit and still leave that lovely sound :upyeah:

  10. If you do change the strap, make sure you get ones with the holes in the right places........there are so many variants out there.........and I can tell you, trying to drill thin strips of stainless is not as easy as it would seem........the drill bit will snag the steel as it cuts through and if you aren't careful, it will put a lovely kink in your shiny strap..........clamp the strap down both sides of the hole you want to drill with wood, well'ard.....
