I've been looking at Desmo's again and getting myself wound up! I earn okay money but I will never be able to own one :-( worse still the chances of ever getting to ride one are slim!.. Anyone else in the same boat? I think there awesome, I want a plain red one with standard pipes and would be very happy.... Suppose I don't 'have' to own a house anymore?
And the day you do get to ride one is the day that your dream is shattered knowing that they are quite ordinary really
I don't know if It's possible I that it could be ordinary... Seriously I'm sure it could feel more refined and less scary than it may appear as a 'GP replica' but honestly I think it would feel pretty awesome...
They aren't at all scary Phil. Quite docile really until you give it some beans. I was the same as you when I 1st saw them, I never thought I'd own one. Once I made my mind up I just made it happen by saving up and selling a couple of bikes that I never thought I would to get the funds.
It'll be hard work. Pointless on the road. Cost an arm and a leg to run. But so do my 916 and 1198. Thats Ducati ownership summed up. But we do it because we all get a little bit of what we love. For me its big fuck off dollops of torque and a booming soundtrack and finding that perfect road at that perfect time. Probably 10% of my time is grinning. The other 90% is hurting. The Desmo will probably be 5/95% but I'd still have one in a heartbeat. But I'd be shit scared off chucking it up the road. I ride free'er when I don't have to worry about how much my exuberance is going to cost me. Plus I couldn't get the best out of a desmo. Thats what I tell myself. I can buy one if i wished. But I have enough money pits in my life. TBH the 916 gives me all I need from a bike. My 1198 is only as good as the SV650 going round me on the outside. To be fast on a straight is easy and means nothing.
I you really want a Desmo, don't be defeatist about it. Decide you are going to have one. Then work out what you'd need to do to get one. Brainstorm that - write down everything possible (not just "I sell my house".) Then work out a way of tackling that, one little bit at a time. If you decide you couldn't possibly have one, you'll be right. As they say, "If you think you can, you're right. If you think you can't, you're right."
No harm in having a dream, and if you are lucky, living it.It's one of the things that makes us happy and keeps us going.
