848 Rear Tail Light And Turn Signals

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by gman2050uk, Apr 29, 2014.

  1. Hi guys got the integrated tail light with turn signals plus putting the signals in the rear vents but on the tail light it has 3 wires for tail/brake light and a left and right turn signal but if I'm right down the left and right turn signals have 2 wires each? Do I just connect the 2 wires together then to the tail light? Any thoughts guys?

  2. Hmmmm..... Would all the lights on the indicator circuit be LED?

Off that integrated tail light I'd expect 5 wires.. One earth, one pos for each indicator / a pos for the tail light & a pos for the brake.... in theory you'd link up the vent indicator wires with the integrated indicator wires... But.. LED needing resistors are you sharing one resistor before the link?... Does the tail unit have the resistors built in?... easy enough to test & at worst you'll have a super fast flash... or a bike in flames hahaha

Ps loving the idea of a dual indicator rear... Just don't think the clear lens looks well on the red bike... But yours aint red

  3. If I remember right Ducati uses separate earths so 6 wires on the loom to the number plate and indicators and another 3 for the tailight.

I think that's what OP was saying 5 wires. So I reckon you can just use the earth Ducati use for the stop/brake light (black) and ignore the 2 indicator earths

If its an 848/1098/1198 it may work fine with the LED's without the need for resistors. Besides if my experience with resistors is anything to go by they may not have any effect. If it does flash fast after install try it with the engine running not just with the ignition on. I have no clue either but my 1098 flashes faster on ignition only than with engine running.

Be aware that strictly speaking its illegal as the indicators need to be a certain minimum distance apart. I doubt you'd get pulled for it but (even though its not part of the testers remit) you may get failed at MOT time.

I have indicators on mine as well as that stop light and I paralleled up the indicators and the flash function in the tailight, via a superseal plug that I can connect/disconnect as I feel necessary. May be an idea to do something similar to fly leads so come MOT time you can bung on indicators easily if necessary.

  4. Hey up John... I noticed the Oxford LED indicators flashed very fast when I hooked them up... resistors calmed them down... Got VERY hot.. Then they failed.. Well, a row of LED's failed within the unit & due to them being in the vent it wasn't a 10 minute job to fix..... In the end the standard filament bulbs were popped in there & fingers crossed its all run fine since

  5. Hutch got the smoke lights, have some resistors with them we'll I thinks that's what they are lol if all goes up in flames will just blame hutch ;)

  6. Hi Hutch

Well I'm glad they worked for you I bunged them in when fitting the DP mirrors as I already had LEDs on the tail and they on their own did not affect the flash rate. When I tried out various resistors it did absolutely sweet FA but each to their own. I've heard a few stories of guys trying resistors or the like on one bike and it working and on others not. I have no clue why it shouldn't by all the rules of physics but there you go, I guess with Ducati you get a bespoke machine.

Resistors will get very hot so they need to mounted well away from plastic and the like and preferably are placed somewhere they get airflow and mounted to a strip of metal to act as a heat sink depending on the type. Also as well as the resistance the power rating for them is important make sure they can physically handle the amount of current passing through them.

That's about all I got on the subject

  7. Say WHAAAAAT?!

  8. Gotta blame someone ;)

  9. Test which wires will fire the indicators, then just tape the other one up. Worked fine for my bike. A work of warning however, be careful how you run the wires from the light into the tail unit. Make sure you keep it well away from the rear seat peg. I stretched the wires when putting it back together and had to get another light

  10. Cheers for the heads up Matt gonna get some extra wire anyway so theirs plenty to play with :)

  11. What do you guys think bout the vented light I have used oem a bit bulky ahold I keep it or get smaller ones?

  12. I've seen photos on the Ultimate site where they used LED strips and it looked better but that's just an opinion, in the end it's what you think is best. I reckon you could get LED strips from Maplins or the "Bay"

Your wiring connectors don't look so hot (sorry) When I did mine I used a Superseals but if your not a wiring freak and want something simple and neat you could try Posi Locks

Posi-Lock series connectors, no crimping tools required

Please don't take offense just some suggestions

  13. Not having it like that lol just testing and used what I had at the time

  14. After waiting for it to finally stop raining I got it finished and got the new tail tidy too :) what you guys think?[IMG][IMG][IMG]

  15. Looks really good mate... All flashing ok? No delay?

  16. Yer no probs will sort a vid out

  17. The led strips is a good little idea if you want to pop the signals in the vents. Mainly as you wont need to change the bulb :)

  18. Looking good Gman :)
