The quoted power of the 98R was at the petrol pump not at the rear wheel , the SPS used to put out the 124 at the wheel. Ducati changed the way they quoted power to match up with the Japs
v nice mate having just had an engine rebuilt i can guess the likely costs of yours do you think those hoses made that much difference to the running temp or is it more likley to be because of less friction due to better build and super finished parts?
Great thread Spareparts and your timing is impecable. As you may have seen my 1098R has just shat itself and a rebuild is imminent. I took your advice and contacted Moto Rapido today. I'll be having a bimble down there on Saturday. I love the gearbox ceramic crumbly bumbly thing and I'm definitely going for that. Definitely going for a blueprint but not decided on any further tuning. Its fucking crackers already... Or it was. I have the big throttle bodies 70mm system and Ducati Performance cam kit plus ecu. Its hard enough to ride now! I'll keep you posted. Cheers.
Nice shiny and smooth parts, which will reduce friction on the mating gears, for smooth gear changes and reliability. I wonder how much gets removed? As this could impact on shaft sizes for bearing fitments etc. I guess it's only a few microns.
surface finishing. makes it all nice n smooth. less stiction. I'm guessing really. but it made the bits look nice. FS beat me to it. pleasantly surprised to be almost correct
I know! Going offshore Africa next week for 5 weeks, head down arse up.... But not in that way you understand. Don't diss the rumbly crumbly ceramic thing. I was talking to a tech at MR tonight and its highly recommended. As most engineers will tell you, 'if it looks right it usually is'. And to me it looks right.
The tumblers are often used to polish machined parts to get rid of the machining marks. Billet calipers, as an example, are put in these to get them smooth.
These R's look like time bombs to me, I'll take a working one off someone's hands for a couple of grand save them the pain and expense
My 1098 scares the shit outta me as well...Especially when it backfires through the air box and I think my balls are getting blown owf! :Nailbiting:
Kriega fork covers, keeps em clean, keeps em leak free Good choice . Keeping the balance between raw performance and reliability is key. The ceramic rumbling has transformed the 'box and you'll love that. And Wilf can work magic on the ECU!
We'll if you ever sell yours let me know as I will buy it Ps it's still the last ducati to win a wsbk race, 2012 I believe....correct me if I'm wrong
Spareparts I agree with your comments following my post and thanks for the heads up on power percentage gains for 1098R compared to 996SPS .It really sounds some bike. One of the reasons I wanted one after being told much better road bike than my dream desmosedici. Im not so keen now after your and mary hinge recent threads though unless I can afford a secondhand 1098R plus another 5k on rebuild parts and improvements.Seriously id only buy one now if I had 5k spare on top to get it right. Not sure why though as it should be right out the box as a top of the range ducati and still be right many miles later with proper care and service. However I think ducati have got off extremely lightly here or am I being unreasonable.Surely the barrels, pistons, gear selctor and rocker are parts that are not fit for purpose. You are a careful owner that over services there top of the range ducati via official ducati dealers.I thought that would carry some weight with Ducati UK.Then again according to one of the 996 threads ducati replaced rockers for 996 series customers in the US free of charge and told everyone else to get fucked.
Hold on hold on ,any more scary threads like this and the beast of beasts wont be the bike lots of people dream of. Im off to Anglesey on Monday ,beter take me spanners,
@Matt, Much as I'd like to think Ducati would replace such things at their expense, it's simply never going to happen - the bike is almost 6 years old and any 'extended warranty' was long gone. Also need to keep this in mind: I am sympathetic to my bikes, but I also don't pussy foot around and will happily ride in the top end of the inters or fast group at any TD. Considering the 98R has delivered the level of performance it has, over as many miles as I've enjoyed, I think this is just the cost of being able to enjoy a top-of-the-range homologation superbike. The bike was running 'perfectly' before I decided to get it rebuilt - and I only decided on this because the numbers mattered to me and I wanted to know it was as good as it could be. This would be classed as rebuilding because of normal wear and tear imho. I am sure that the majority of 6-10 year old superbikes do not produce the same amount of power as they did when new - true for any combustion engined bike or car. The 98R has been perfectly reliable in the time I've had it - just as reliable as the other Jap bikes I've had previously. One wouldn't expect a 911 Turbo to have the same cost of ownership/maintenance as a Ford Mondeo. Likewise, one should never expect a 1098R to have the same cost of ownership as a CB500.
