Tinted Visors

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Bluehawk, May 7, 2014.

  1. How many of you have been stopped for having a tinted visor? Do you get issued with a horti or just fined? Do you carry your clear just in case? Thinking of changing my clear one. Can't be bothered with the sunglasses combo..

  2. There are some light tinted visor which are legal and I used to have a road legal iridium visor which was superb. It took aware all the glare. Perhaps worth looking into.

To be stopped for a road illegal visor alone, however, would be unfortunate. It is more probable one would be stopped for doing something stupid and drawing attention to oneself. Then the visor "breach" would likely be thrown into the naughty boy list.

I am not sure what happen should a third party crash into you. Would an "illegal" visor cause a material culpability change for the biker? I would suspect so, but am not a legal bod.

  3. I've been using dark visors for as long as I've been riding bikes. For me to not do when it is bright would be as dangerous as using one at night as I would struggle to see into the bright light.

I was talking to an optician a while back who couldn't believe that dark visors are illegal, he reckoned it was potentially damaging to your sight to not wear one if in bright sunlight.

That said I've never had an issue with the law, even when stopped for other reasons so I think the Police are generally sensible, of course there maybe the odd one who isn't but in general I think it's accepted that dark visors on a bright day is OK.

I recall a few years back there was a (sham) consultation on the use of dark visors and IIRC the majority were in favour but the government of the day decided they knew better after all and left the law as it was?

Personally I don't care what the law says on this, I'll continue wearing a dark visor when appropriate.

Aa couple of years ago I passed a couple of bike cops who were wearing dark visors, so it seems others share my view.

  5. Never. But I always, if i am going to be out late or touring in frog, carry a clear around my waist. I got caught out once and had serious red eye full off dead flying beasties by the time i got home.

  6. I used to have iridium visors, I never liked the dark ones as I found them just too dark, but the iridium ones were easily scratched and I got fed up of paying stupid money for them.
So eventually bought a helmet with a built in sunvisor.
    The best of both worlds.

  7. You could also consider a pinlock anti-mist insert.
Tinted ones are available in various shades, and can be removed if you get caught out as dusk falls.
Or, for a little more cash, you can also get reactolite inserts which change colour as the light changes.

  8. Been using iridium or black for more years than I can remember never had an issue. I've been stopped a few times and been knocked off my bike and was only witness to an accident in which the driver was killed. Never once been mentioned. Small number plates have been mentioned more.

  9. I think it's up to 20% tint is legal, look for the marking on a genuine visor. I use a 'light tint' legal one and find it a good compromise as the dark ones are tricky when u go into a shadowed corner etc. Also deffo use a pinlock, so much better for stopping misting.

  10. Always use an iridium visor. Was stopped ages ago in a spot check, and the police complemented me on the quality of the visor .... Even though it was iridium on my Simpson ( none road legal version)

  12. Surely common sense prevails, I wear a dark visor if its a bright clear day and clear if its not.

I've also noticed using a dark visor around town i.e. 30mph the majority of car drivers don't pull out in front of you as often. I assume that's because they are unsure if you have seen them?

  13. I had to take a long ride home in the dark with a legal light tint visor (cos I forgot to bring the clear one), and even the light tint severely cut down my vision, so I can kind of see why the law was thought up, even if it was poorly implemented. However I will continue to wear whatever visor I see fit, legal or otherwise, because I am in possession of a modicum of common sense.

Why all lids don't come with flip-up sunvisors nowadays, I don't know. It's the best thing ever to happen to crash hats.

  14. Have noticed more and more cars with a full side tint to the windows. Has the law changed, or do people just not bother?

  15. Cars have always been allowed tinted side and rear windows.

  16. Thought the front side windows were only allowed a certain percentage tint? Seeing more and more cars blacked out.

  17. No, it's only the windscreen that's regulated.

  18. Dangerous. I get pissed off with the mania for tinted glass (even if it hasn't reached Muscovite proportions - there everyone's car has it). You can't see through the car you're behind so it's like being stuck behind a lorry. Ditto people carriers, SUVs and cross-overs. They're all too big and seriously reduce the visibility of following traffic.

  19. More interesting that its not part of the MOT... Even if it is illegal/unsafe....

  20. you are wrong................................................................again;)

you must of seen the shoite cop programmes on tv where cars are stopped because of tinted windows tint man tested and then the car seized until the tint is removed.....even at the side of the road.

  21. Post 16 is correct then...... Some tinting is allowed.....
