What's A Mg Le Mans Mk 1 Really Like..

  1. Davida helmet ad

Bike is a Tonti modified to a monoshock back end. I notice its also got the race quick fill oil cap on the rocker box too

    Nice

  2. That is one of the best motorcycling images of all time. I quite often see it. Who did it and what for? Some advertising campaign or other or just a gratuitously nice pic? You could make a good postcard out of that.

  3. What there's a girl in the picture you say!

  4. This must be one area where the Two is an improvement, especially in the wet?

Actually, whilst not in the market at the moment, I'd really like a Le Mans as my next bike/project, always fancied one ever since seeing my first some 30 odd years ago. Not too bothered which model but I do want the 850 with older appearance.

    One day...

  5. The only times I had any problems in the wet........

.......well, damp or fog actually; rain was OK.......

.....was with the d*mn Magnetti Marelli coils............

In the rain or dry, they were perfectly OK, but when it was damp, foggy or misty, one day one would break down and another day it would be the other one..........

Took me ages to establish what was causing it, until a local electrical specialist tested them in the dark, inside an old aquarium which he had fed steam into via hose on a boiling kettle spout..........(Ingenious I reckon)..........

    ..........Blue sparks everywhere..........

They got changed for Bosch ones and never had a spot of bother again........

  6. Photo by Ben Part (he of Sideburn Magazine) for Davida Helmets of his self-modified bike with Katrien aboard, taken in Amsterdam, where Ben was living at the time - 2004.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  7. Went down to see this one today: and wow what a place.

1977 Moto Guzzi 850 LeMans MkI | Motori Di Marino - Italian Motorcycle Specialists

It is a genuine example, not messed with as far as I could see apart from wrong rear indicators, replacement speedo and wrong seat, imported from Australia in 2005 but it still got me all excited, just what I was hoping it would do after not seeing one for 20 odd years and I love the colour. At £7500 it's not bad value over others I have seen. Don't think I would spend more for a restored one but think I could do better for £7500.........be patient, and i'm not ruling out a 2 after seeing some of your posts. There's a white one on MCN - be nice converted to look like a 1

That 750SS was just out of this world, it was like a new bike, all yours for £18k :(

  11. Loving this thread ,ah Guzzi Le Mans Mk 1 what I would have given for one when they came out .
This was my dream bike and way out of my price range ,funny thing ,nowts changed my dream Guzzi now is an MGS-01 Corse and even more out of my range.
I am off to the Bikers Classic at Spa in July ,always loads of Guzzi eye candy there , Johny foreigner loves them

  12. See you confused me Fig stating earlier that the III was a roundfin and being a lazy assed git I never bothered to check. That's why I thought IV or V.

IIIs are still quite pretty stock even with the square barrels its the IVs and Vs that look so angular and odd today.

You can buy a special conversion plate to put a roundfin rocker box on a square fin motor and it take a second look to see that's its a square fin bike.

Pietro's has some great bikes, was the Magni still there? He does command top dollar though.

  13. Yeah Magni was on the front when I arrived but disappeared while I was there ?

I think his prices seem OK compared to Made in Italy, that SS for £18k was like new and completely restored, started first go and sounded sweet....

anybody heard of these guys ?

  14. Just asking on the Magni, I'm restoring one (its totally in pieces at the moment) that's very like it (but different engine) and I know the guy whose buying that one. He might have came down when you were there.

Pietro is fair I'm just saying if your after a bargain, he's not the place to go. He is well reliable and fair you pay the price but you know who your dealing with and problems are sorted with him.

Never heard of the guys on your link

  15. Off topic a bit but I`m amazed Guzzis in general are not more popular. I`ve had 3 alongside my Ducatis over the years and they offer something completely different and really enjoyable. Not particularly super sporty or fast and I cant comment on the v7 range but the 1100cc-1400cc ones are lots of fun.

  16. There was a Scottish chap there looking at the Magni......heard him talking to Pietro. Also talking to a chap on a Jota. How often do you see that, Jota, Magni, Le Mans and a 74 SS sitting alongside each other.........heaven !!

  17. That was him tricolore

I'm going to mail him tee hee. He's got some collection of machines, one day I'm going to get to see them.

He mailed me asking if I was interested and apart from not having the kind of dosh Pietro wanted for it, the Sfida I'm doing up looks very like it almost identical except its got an 1100 Sport engine (slightly less power). I prefer the sport as there are some known issues with the 4V motors, although I've only heard of one that's grenaded.

Besides the 4V motors have belts and I'm bloody sick of belts

  18. I'm getting a bit paranoid about 2's being made to look like 1's and being ripped off..

What do you guys think of this one ? thought that 1's didn't have the warning lights on the dash ? and is that switchgear from a 2 ?
