Floppy Mirrors

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by conkers, May 19, 2014.

  1. Took my mirrors off 1000ss ie to repaint as the black stems were really tatty looking. Blowed if I can get the things to tighten up properly. Anything approaching 50mph and they slowly fold back! They've gone all floppy on me !!!
Is there something I'm not doing correctly or is there a black art to steadying them.
Thanks in advance for all useful replies.

  3. Take 'em off again and tighten the screw up..........or failing that, remove the screw (which is probably a self tapper) then tap the stem and stick a c/s bolt in...........

I don't know what the 1000 cc mirrors are like, so I'm guessing at a M4 to M5 tap size.

  4. If they are anything like the carbed ones they are a nightmare. Try thread lock on the bolt.

  5. Threadlock didn't work on mine which is why I drilled and tapped them....

  6. Or....drill them and tap them! Lol

  7. It wasn't that the screw was coming undone..........it was just that I couldn't get the b*ggers tight enough.....

  8. Thanks for that Mr C - a really useful piece of advice.

  9. Cheers Arquebus / Desmoquattro will try both .

  10. If they are anything like the carbed SS ones, there is a self tapper screw that tightens the balljoint of the arm into the base..........the arms appear to be either ally or a die cast metal of some sort..........I drilled as far as I dare and tapped it M4 and then used a crosshead c/s screw about 30mm long.........
