I'm looking at putting a Mono fairing and subframe onto my Bipesto. The Mrs doesn't seem over keen to get on the back and as the bike was registered as a Mono but was converted at some point in it's life it seems like a good plan to restore it. Has anyone got the bits lying around that they want to sell?
Original subfames are as rare as hen's teeth. They are around £650 from Ducati, but you can get pattern ones for around £200ish. If you are lucky they come up on e-bay from time to time.
Thanks for the feedback. What does an origonal look like as opposed to a pattern one. Is it something like this?
This is a later one, the earlier versions are silver, have less gusseting and were prone to cracking around the mountings for the exhaust. The one you've found is a pattern item.
They do turn up on ebay, dont get the pattern ones that Moto46 sell. They had the decency to tell me that they do crack as they are designed for track rather then potholed roads
The original Ducati oe item is prone to cracking as well,as mine did,it seems some were defective from the factory....probably Friday afternoon jobs
The ones from 06 onwards are better made and have more bracing/gusseting. Known to be a problem on the early bikes, Ducati replaced as a "good will" gesture. They did mine at 9 years old at cost.
Most people did, mine failed well out of warranty and I had my bike serviced by Baines Racing. If I had had it serviced by a dealer I probably would have got it for free. I still got an OE part for less that a pattern item and sold the re-welded original on flea-bay, so it cost me less than £80 all in.
I didn't even know mine had gone until I took it for its service where it was spotted, years out of warranty,i had it pro welded, been okay since...well known fault on early ones apparently.
Thanks for the advice guys. Nice to know the problems and what to look out for before you buy. Not often you read about people getting great value from a Ducati dealer.
Got the Bip' seat and all built up ready to go on if ever the missus wants to hop on the back.....not happened yet. Had the mono subframe crack but Ducati wouldn't play as mine originally a Bip converted to mono before I bought it. Originals were replaced with stronger 05/06 upgrade (which mine had and still cracked). Sourced a stronger design still from USA and so far (18months) OK. Haven't had the original welded up yet..... Tip ensure exhaust is properly aligned as it can 'hang' pulling sub-frame down and putting undue stress on the subframe behind where you sit.
I had an earlier one that snapped but I had it professionally welded by a chap who is a very highly qualified welder (does MOD stuff). Has been on the bike for the last 3 years but I recently found a later gen version for a good price so will be swapping it over very soon. I have pics of it all etc. Im looking for about 80 quid. If interested pm me. JC
Thinking of converting mine to a mono. What do i need? 1) Subframe 2) Rear fairing part in black Is that it?
Rear fairing part won't fit with bip front fairing piece. You'll need both fairing parts from the mono. Try to get the later black alloy subframe if you can as there's a few extra gussets welded to them to give them extra strength.
