Can any body help with tyre wear? What’s about the average distance for Pirelli Scorpion rear tyres I have done around 4.2K on the original rear tyre so fare and there appears to be plenty more miles left in it, but I have a trip to South of France via Black Forest, Alps, and back up through central massif at the end of August and don’t want the hassle of changing the tyre on route.
Difficult one this. You could risk it but that is what I did a few weeks ago and regret it now. My tyres were knackered half way through the trip and looking back I couldn't get the best out of the bike and myself because of the tyres were old. Pr3s have transformed the bike and I would have loved to have done the trip on them. If there is any sign of being squared off replace them, don't care what anyone says, you can't get the thing around bends quickly with old boots on.
Change it. I'm currently stuck in France after my 3.9K old Scorpion dies a death in rural France on Bastille day. Ok it was punctured by tocks on a trail, but there was naff all left and I was going to have to take it very easy to get home on it.
They look awesome - are they? My Scorpions did 0 miles (I hated them in the wet on my test ride). I made the dealer change them as a condition of me buying the bike. Got PR3s on at the moment.
i got 2,500 mls out of the back. found it fine in all conditions. maybe i'm not a rider who can feel the diference between original tyres & after market ones but i have done loads of track days and consider myself a reasonably fast road rider and personally think most road tyres are absolutelly fine for the job they're meant for
p s that was taken at oulton park on a very hot day on my 990 superduke on original tyres. not trying to be big headed just saying how good most o/e tyres are .
I got about 6500miles out of the scorpions! What shocked me and caught me out was that once the wear indicaters have arrived you don't have much time! See my thread: http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f6/dont-duck-around-2652/
Just back fromWDW2012 earlier in the month, I had 3500 on when I left now nearing 7k 2 up + luggage a lot of motorway mileagesquared them off prematurely so only good for another 500 or so. Fronts fine. M PR3 V soon!
2.5 thousand miles on mine and the rear was shot - and that included running in miles! Changed to pr3s and would have done so even if the rear hadn't been worn. The scorpions were okay in the dry, although the rear would spin up on white lines. But in the wet (and let's face it in the UK it is usually wet!) the tyres are shocking - no grip. So change them before your trip - you'll get much more out of the bike. The bike and the roads deserve it! Crypto
.....In the right conditions. Take a tyre out of its best operating temperature/weather conditions and it can become very costly indeed.
Apart from the puncture, I like the Scorpions. They grip very well in the dry and I've had no issue in the wet at all. If you get the suspension set up wrong, then the bike feels like rubbish, especially if you have it set to hard, but when it's all as it should be, they've been great. I'll be interested in trying the PR3's, but how would they cope with sustained high speed riding (twisties rather than motorway) when loaded up in warm temperatures?
Thanks guys for so much response..... I was expecting the advice generally to be fit new. It’s interesting to see some only achieving 2.5K.... How fast do you mad bu&&ers ride  !! I haven’t had any complaints with grip on the scorpions and ride them within about 3-4 mm of the edge, closer than I can on my street triple :frown: I only have had one slip on a dry roundabout in the Czech republic with them and it felt like the traction control stabilised things, so not to concerned with changing make but looks like P3's are very popular route to go.
I squeezed 5 k out of my scorpions , but they were past thier best well before then, most of those miles were with a pillion although a very light one , Ive had MP2 s fitted now and they seem brilliant , will be interesting too see how long they last .....
