  1. true but to ask that question you need an answer that can only be delivered via a referendum ?

voting for MEP is not answering that question directly, its voting for parties on a variety of issues

under a referendum nobody is deprived of the right to vote on this question, given that you advocate rights and being allowed to vote on important issues I would have thought that you would be keen to have a vote on staying in the EU

  2. what really concerns me is how one of the principal tenets of the EU project - free movement of labour across borders seems (and I stress that) to have caused tensions in our society. The news is reporting a rise in the number of people describing themselves as racist and of those that don't consider themselves as holding racist views, 70% think there's too much immigration.

On that basis, is there any wonder UKIP scored so highly? If this was addressed properly (whatever that means), would peoples concerns about Europe be addressed?

  3. i've stayed out of this as i don't want to get involved in the pro / anti europe arguement, one point i will make (and i'm not sure if it has been raised before) is that the turnout nationally for the elections was 36%! If the public has spoken then surely what they have said is that 'we really don't care'...

Imo the general public is completely disillusioned with the political system, the career politicians come across as only out for themselves and we just can't be arsed with it any more. The problem is that this is when the 'swivel eyed loons' and the nutters start to gain some traction...

  4. Somewhat disingenuous, this. The idea that you can vote for an MP who will remove the UK from the EU is horribly simplistic.

When you vote for a Party, you effectively vote for all the policies the party stands for. Take a hypothetical, but readily recognised example:

Party for the Left - manifesto: socialism, inclusion within EU
Party for the Right - manifesto: capitalism, inclusion within EU
Anti-EU party - manifesto: exclusion from EU, any number of (fringe) policies

As a Right Winger that is also a Europhobe, you want right wing policies but have to forego these if you want to leave the EU. Similarly, a Left Winger Europhobe will need to turn his back on his core values in order to achieve his desires as regards the EU.

In order to exit the EU, you need to vote against the party that espouses all of your political ideals in favour of a single-issue party which has no experience, and quite possibly no other motivations in common with you. Talk about throwing out baby with the bath water.

The only way to settle the issue of whether the Public wants to be within the EU or not is to hold a referendum. I am not arguing whether there should be a referendum but that is the only logical way to settle the issue. Inclusion with the EU does not align readily within traditional Left and Right ideological divisions, therefore it needs to be separated out from parliamentary elections and be the subject of a referendum.

    Isn't that obvious?

  5. Loz, you put the argument perfectly. Unfortunately, I think that Pete knew this when he wrote his post.

Pete, please don't take this personally, but it seems that you are the closest we get to a member of the political class here. When you put something out there that looks perfectly uncontroversial, we, the 'ordinary' bloke in the street, might see it in a different light.

  7. It is my belief that Pete is a benevolent Troll. He will chuck a few hand granades into a thread and sit back, light his pipe and swill his brandy. Whilst we run around talking shite as a consequence.

    Its entertaining.

  13. how do these people exist in any modern world?!

as to the poll on racist tendencies, its not as simple as it was. A racist feeling was traditionally held against someone of another colour rather than country of origin (French excepted ;) )

On that basis, simply ask 100 people what they think of gypsies. I would suggest thats going to be more than 75% of ill will towards a 'race'. Not really the same headline though, is it
