1200 Random Engine Cut Out At Low Speed

  1. Hi, I've had my new UK 2014 MTS 1200 a couple of months now. At 50 miles while trickling up to a junction, very low speed, clutch fully pulled in, the engine suddenly died. Restarted immediately on the button and continued. No recurrence until about 500 miles when exact same thing happened. Then a few miles further on in similar circs, it cut out with a sort of spit sound. Restarted but immediately cut out again. Reported this and at 1st service dealer found a gear position error code (my dash has shown the correct gear so far). Dealer cleared the code and did short road test, checked again and no codes appeared.
Next day after about 30 miles (850 miles total) the engine cut again just as I was about to stop at a roundabout. It restarted immediately and ran fine.
I took it straight back to the dealers who said the'll fit a new gp sensor and I left it there a/w the part. I've not managed to get a straight answer on whether they've actually checked to see if its the same error code, which I'd say would be the first port of call. I'm not sure why a gp error should cut the engine. So far and mercifully this hasn't happened at higher revs/speeds!
I'm definitely not stalling the motor, she's just dieing at random when not under load. Maybe after the gp sensor replacement she'll be ok but it'll take a while of trouble free riding before I feel chilled about it.
My experience of error codes is that they don't necessarily pinpoint the problem.
Naturally the dealers say they've never experienced this glitch before, but I wondered if anyone has had a similar problem or can give a good idea as to what's going on.
Otherwise I love the way the bike rides.
    Cheers.

  2. I have had exactly the same thing four times in 10,500 miles on a 2013 Skyhook. It is worrying but so far two dealers have failed to find a cause.
Each time it has happened it has been at low revs while coasting or slowing down with the clutch in.

  3. Thanks for the reply Speed_Triple. I note that there was a VOSA recall for this problem back in 2011
Recall Details for DUCATI - Multistrada 1200
But our newer bikes aren't in the affected range. That was a new software fix for the ECU and I'm told mine has the latest updates etc. If mine is still playing up after the new sensor then I'll keep on at the dealer. It would be interesting to know if there are any more instances of this with newer bikes. It would add weight to the cause, should it develop into one.

  4. Mine's done that too. Do you also find when pulling away gently in Urban or Touring modes that you have to slip the clutch a lot until the revs are over 2000rpm?

Current opinion is that it's to do with the closed-loop O2 sensor circuit that's used at low revs, and something like the Fat Duc O2 Manipulator would cure it, but I don't see why I should have to pay to fix something that's potentially a safety issue, particularly when the bike costs so damn much in the first place.

  5. Cheers. Might check that out - I've just found out that I can just about afford to chop mine in for a new model Pikes Peak later this summer. Wonder if that will have the same problem?

  6. my recommendation would be to change your starter/kill switch - I am on my fourth. Same symptoms in my case bike started to cut out at motorway speeds.

£40 odd quid part, but tank and panels need to come off as wire connector is under tank - good few hours work but not difficult.

the switch has a small gap at the bottom where water can get in and settle and there is a small circuit board in there, damage is not usually visible unfortunately.

  7. Motorway speeds ... that's really worrying!

  8. Hi Eddie, I wouldn't say I have to slip the clutch excessively but I do have to feed it in and balance the throttle more progressively than the big in line fours that I'm used to. The demonstrator felt the same and I put it down to the thumpy nature of the twin at low revs as opposed to the turbine like feel of my fours (1250s), which can pull away smoothly from just above tickover. I don't do a lot of urban but reckon I'm getting used to the feel. Just have to make sure I've got the correct part of brain engaged when I jump back on a four :Woot:

Don't want to go down any mods route as the bike is brand new and still under warranty so I feel Ducati should be fixing my glitch.

  9. Yup it's a real bike - not a dodgem!

  10. O good I thought I was the only one with this issue. Always when I'm pulling up to a junction. Makes u look like a dick cos installed but clutch is in and get a spit and cut out, I'm at 1200 miles now and still waiting for my dealer to get bk to me bout warranty work. Everytime I ring they say we will ring you bk tomorrow and never do, a week later I give them a call and same thing. Starting to get so pissed off that they can do everything on my bike then take it somewhere else.

  11. Where do you live? You can take your bike to any ducati dealer for warranty work. I always go to Snell's in Alton. They are brilliant.

  12. ducati should implement the same service i witnessed at fiat. you got two hours to diagnose a fault, if you couldn't tie it down you could request a dealer visit by a factory super tech. i learnt more from him than any coarse i went on.

  13. So that's another new bike with the same issue. It's beginning to look like there's still a random bug that hasn't been ironed out by Ducati. I wonder what it takes for a dealer to get the factory to investigate?

My dealer is in Bristol. I only left the bike with them on Sat because they said the part would be in Tuesday. I phoned today and it still hasn't arrived from Ducati so I'm well peeved. And I'm yet to be convinced that the gp sensor is the root cause.
What area are you in Ff6022 because the impression my dealer gives is that I'm the first to report this issue?

  14. Shame they're a bit of a haul from me. Do I take it though that they also haven't found the root cause?
I guess 4 times in 10,500 is a bit less irritating than my 5 in 850 with 4 of those in the last 300 mls.

  15. For sure. I'm more worried by the Forum member here who's experienced it at motorway speeds. That's ferkin dangerous! To be fair to dealers it is difficult for them to trace intermittent faults like this one. I'm wondering whether it's anything to do with the sidestand cut-out switch. Either way, it's for Ducati to sort out really.

  16. I also had the same issue (I wrote a thread about it somewhere if you search), replacement kill switch seemed to fix it.

  17. Analysing this with my former RAF systems engineer hat on, I think we've got 2 separate issues going on.
An intermittently faulty kill switch (or side stand switch) would tend to cut the engine randomly at anywhere in the rev range, as some folks have found.
The other fault of the engine cutting while coasting, clutch in, low speed and low revs sounds remarkably similar to that described in the 2011 Vosa recall. So I'm wondering if some new bikes still have a bug in that dept. Trouble is, intermittent faults are the very devil to trace.

The new pd sensor for my bike is now at the dealers and I hope they get it fitted and tested today so that I can retrieve my bike and see where we go from there.

  18. Sorry I haven't replied. I'm a little to far south for snells really. I'm East Sussex. Did get a call from my dealer today though. They will fix me fork and said the black brake fluid is normal due to heat transfer, lovely, what a perfect premium bike I have here. As for this fault I haven't told them about it yet.

  19. Had same issue with my Diavel (pre twin spark) 2 sidestand switches, still didnt cure it, this, along with other issues I had with Diavel was reason I swapped for an MTS. Turned out it was the ECU!
