I'm wondering what's involved in changing the slave cylinder seals on my 1995 900 SS as it seems to be leaking? Is it a lip seal? If so, does anybody know the size please? Would I be better off getting an alternative one to the original do you think?
Can't tell you the size, but most people take this as the opertunity to replace the slave cylinder to reduce the effort on pulling the clutch in. However if you're ok with the pull then there used to be x-section seal you could fit which helped with leaking issues. Check on eBay and see if there are any for sale
I could only come up with Oberon slave cylinders and second hand ducati ones for £50, oh and Kawasaki slave seals after searching on eBay, Mdina had this seal Clutch slave cylinder seal,996,900,748. Part Number: 93040091A Think it might be the one I need, but not sure.
About 5 years ago I bought a replacement "Quad ring" type slave cylinder seal from Pro Twins when I was ordering some other parts - I had read somewhere that they supplied them and that this is an improved design -it cost less than a fiver. It might be worth giving them a call Pro Twins - About Us I replaced my seal with the new one (which I think did look a bit different from the knackered original) and it has not leaked since then. I gave the inside of the cylinder a good clean (probably with something gentle like paint cutter/restorer) and all I'd add is that the other stupid design aspect of my slave cylinder is that it has a sort of raised shape or symbol on the outside (can't be bothered to go and look or photograph) and that has nasty sharp edges on it (as I learned).
Problem with original is all the crap that gets thrown up by the chain onto it and it works its way into the slave. I can highly recommend an Oberon, makes light work of the clutch. Best part of £100 new though
+1 on the Oberon slave cylinder, great quality and a lighter action, you can have them in a selection of colours too if that's your thing.
Ordered an Oberon slave cylinder, just getting a black one to match the engine. Thanks for the advice.
Fitted the Oberon, the clutch lever feels much better, easier to control when pulling away. Just the on/off throttle to sort out next!
I've was using my SS to commute to work last week and must admit it does seem harder to get into neutral now with the Oberon fitted, really have to snick it into neutral whilst still on the move or wait with the clutch in, in first gear at lights and stuff. That must be the trade off for the easy lever pull, although it never felt a hard pull with the original.
Your master cyl only moves a set amount of fluid so a bigger slave piston moves less. Important to make sure no air in system, bleed from m/acyl (slacken banjo) as a bit of air can get tapped there. maybe fit later type master cyl with higher ratio.
I thought all SS's were easy to get into neutral, after all there is one between each gear!! I have just order two sets of slave seals from pro twin, are at the post office awaiting collection. There service seems good and they seem to know what there talking about, there timing belts seem good value too for genuine iterms.
+ 1 Just got two sets of the genuine ducati older belts two weeks ago. They have about a 4 year shelf life.
