well having just completed a 620 mile trip round wales yorkshire etc my tyres are now done and with only 2400 miles on them , yes did do a lap of the ring on them but even so they are truly shite the front has lost its profile completely also found the scorps to be crap in the wet hopefully will stick some pr4's on asap on a good note brekkie at the ponderosa was nice and hot chocolate at the cat and fiddle was good
Pr3s on mine. Managed 4300 miles and they are just going, not bad. Should manage a few hundred more then change them on 7500 service. Most people seem to run in to issues with the Scorpions, strange front tyre wear at early miles. Honestly thought they were fine in the wet, when the tread was still good. Going back to Pr2s. Better dry grip I think. Better wear. Hold a line through a corner better. Seriously cant tell the difference in the wet. ....or Angel gts, or Roadsmarts 2s.....why the hell is there so much choice!
Yes Pete will let you know , a mate did 8000 on his pr 3's so you must be heavy on tyres , z8 and Bridgestone t30 was the others I was thinking of , we did a lot of wet weather riding this weekend and the 2 lads on pr3.s were flying so they are ticking the boxes , on my last 1200 I did get 4500 from the scorps but I reckon these would be lethal after 3000
Currently got a PR3 front and PR4GT rear, 4 hrs in torrential rain on sat, fully loaded with pillion, no issues at all. Think my next tyres would be either the Angel GT's or stick with PR4GT's
I had Z8's put on last week. I didn't realise how rubbish the scorps were until I rode back with new boots. The Z8's are prob the most neutral tyres I have had in a long while, really impressed. I used to like Dunlops but I find their taller profile (IMO) not so suitable for this type of bike. No science , only what my seat tells me. If the bike was my only form of transport I would definitely have PR3/4 s on in keeping with British weather. As it is, other than when touring my choice is to go out when its dry.
No idea on lomgevity yet, but they managed well on road (progile is taller so be warned) and on a very wet and damp track Tues. There is a video of a mate following me, loads of wet grip and confidence
I managed 4k miles from the rear Z8 and had it replaced last month. The front will be ready for changing about the same time as the rear I guess.
just looked at mine, and tbh the rear is fairly chewed on the rhs from one dry session at Donny, and not like I was pushing either.
A lot of the modern tyres offer grip beyond our road abilities, and wet grip is brilliant on the PR2 PR3 Z8 etc,Infact the problem lies within ones head, one dodgy moment on a manhole cover and we think the tyres have gone to shit and will spit us off in no time, you would be AMAZED at how fast you can go in the wet on these tyres, much faster than you imagine.
Currently running a used Scorpion front (2k miles) with a rear Dunlop Roadsmart (3k miles) and running in the wet, they seem fine - go figure?
Interesting that... I had sportsmarts before my current Z8,s that are just about ready to change. (not a bad tyre by any means) but I really liked the sportsmarts and im thinking of going back to them with Sportsmarts 2 What's your reason for staying with the sportsmarts..? I mainly try to avoid the rain and like brisk spirited riding, and occasional 2 up touring
My rear MPR3 was changed after 8764 miles for a MPR4. Most 2 up riding and a track day. Still had legal tread as passed MOT but was squaring off slightly. So very happy with wear rate. Ridden in torrential rain for 3 hours with the new '4' on and very impressed. £156 fitted, ride in, ride out.
I had the original sportsmarts on a fire blade and did a few track days and they were awesome and I knew what I could do on them. So fitted to the Multi, got same feeling , confidence and good mileage. I tried some pirelli super corsa things and found it was like riding balanced on the blade of a knife , super fast turn in but didn't like them so went back. Just come back from riding the furka pass, gotthard pass, in an errm spirited way and they never let me down once , only when picking up standing water was the traction control stepping in . So in short the tyre is far stickier than my riding skills need , they go well wet / dry in long commutes but most of all I know what they feel like when they start to loose traction and how they react wet/dry so i guess like a comfy pair of shoes , i always go back. I may try the PR4's in the winter as I ride year round not for any other reason than they say 20% better stopping on white lines etc or some such figure.
Just had sportsmart 2 fitted to my strada. Done just under a 1000 mile on them now sitting with blades & r1s all day so quite spirited & no sign of wear yet. Again I had the original sportsmarts fitted to an 848 & loved them fast road & wet track days couldn't fault them. Highly recommended!!!
I fitted Angel GTs yesterday.....went for a ride up the local twisty roads today. I found they were progressive when leaning in, held a good line and was able to get them all the way over (nil chicky strips). I'm impressed! I'll be keen to see how long they last and how they perform in the rain.
My MTS booked in for 7.5k service and new tyres. Gone for Angel GT in the end. Nothing but good press for them and good feedback from users. I have to be very honest though and admit that what I thought was a problem with PR3 front was (mostly) suspension set up. Was convinced there were issues related to tyres and wear at 4600miles up, but after adjusting the suspension back and front on Friday by only a few clicks/turns rebound and damping, would probably be happy on any tyres. Zero chicken strips now and superb, precise handling. That with a well worn out rear. It is easy to say new/different brand tyres are chalk and cheese for the difference. In truth anything is better than worn out abused tyres! But it just shows how little things can make a difference , including getting ideas in your head about 'non problems' when the basic bike set up is key.
