Had a search through but couldn't really find anything definitive on this, rode the 899 and 1199 back to back today, loved both bikes for different reasons, the 899 just felt like a faster better spec'd faster turning more comfortable version of my 848 Evo and something I am sure I would be a bit quicker on track with. But the 1199 felt like a different type of bike , I loved the I loved the motor, the magnesium parts, the single swinger and the colour dash. I'd have bought the 1199 there and then I think if it wasn't for the throttle response. I found it snatchy being the best way I could describe it, I went down a fabulous sestion of the A272 off the A31 and accelerating and off the throttle it was fine, but on a constant throttle through bends or on a straight (holding it at a reasonably sensible speed) every bump in the road was transmitting to the throttle and just snatching it / jerking it a bit. The 899 didn't exhibit this at all, I spoke to the dealer and they sought of acknowledged it and said it was likely to be the setting of the springing in the throttle, in comparison a multistrada throttle felt firmer in it's turn. So is there a fix, is a custom map the answer, different throttle or something ?
This is not something I recognise from doing the same route albeit a week apart from the 899 & 1199. I bought the 1199 having tried both from the two dealers on that circuit.
Interesting you didn't find the snatch........... so to speak......... What made you go for the 1199 then ?
It is the first super bike I have ever bought and I felt that with the 899, i would always be thinking I could have had more. TBH in town i use the wet mode, but out on the open road normal. I have never tried race mode, no need. DP seat is a must as far as I am concerned.
I went with ABS with Termi end cans and have started buying some carbon from Conquest to replace some of the nasty black plastic.
Was it in race mode? I know from my own multi that sport mode quickens the throttle response and I find on the road makes it s tad snatchy. It touring it's perfect, and on track where it's on/off also perfect
There is a recognised "feature" of the 1199 where the throttle can be snatchy between 4k and 5k. It was improved (on my bike) with one of the upmaps but is still there. If I am on a constant throttle I keep the revs out of that band so no issue. I use sports mode all the time, but with the race throttle setting.
@bradders - it was not in race, just in sport, I didn't get the 1199 into race, but the 899 in race had that sensitivity you speak of so I went back into sport. @Bobthedog - "Feature" like it ! I had a 205GTI back in the day where the revs just used to fall away and stall the car when off the throttle and that was a feature ! I didn't check the revs it was doing at the time but good to know that. I think I need to get another test ride on the 1199, I'd like to try one again and watch the revs and also be good to try one with the termis on. I'll also ask the dealer today if it was on the very latest map.
I'm not sure whther the OEM ohlins are actually any better than the OEM showa. Seems to be a lot of problems with them reported. Are we just paying extra for gold stanchions and a yellow spring or are they actually okay? Is it worth the extra for an 'S' when a base 1199 will do? I dont see many threads about the oem showa.
I'm not an expert on the suspension of the 3 panigales but when they were running through the differences from the 899 and 1199 it seemed that the 899's suspension was less sophisticated than the 1199 and everyone raves about the 899's handling so yep I think the "Ohlins Gold" is a big price hike. But you get the wheels as well............
I rode a 1199 and i hated the throttle response. Exactly the same problem as you mentioned. Im gonna ride a 899 one day and see hat thats like but i doubt ill be able to overcome the lack of spec comapred to a 1199.
^^^ and that's where I am in my thinking today, want the 1199 spec with the 899 throttle ! As I've said before an 899s or r would be perfection for me.
i love my 848 too much to comprimise so unless the new bike is perfect ill be keeping it. And probaly look to add a mv f3 aswell with the cash
yeh the 675 have a bad rep, but you can get them for £6k, so its not too bad to spend a few hundred having it mapped. If i buy a 1199 id have to sell my 848, and add the 6k and then still only have one bike which isnt perfect. For the amount they cost they should be perfect. Other option is to wait and see if a 899s follows at some point.
I found the 1199 ohlins way to stiff had it resprung/revolved by mct different bike ,worse case scenario on throttle response is a power commander and map ,termi cans do make a difference
Don't judge it too quickly, until you've managed to get out for a bit longer and give it some more beans mate. I also test rode the same roads and found the same thing at first, but I then decided to stick some petrol in and did some more riding at a bit of a higher pace and fell in love with the bike. The 1199 need to be hustled a bit (well a lot actually) to show their true character, and are a bit rubbish at low speeds compared to friendlier bikes. Once you start to feel at home with the bike and ride it harder you don't have those problems with the throttle. After a few days of riding I found I didn't even have much issues at slow speed either as I had got more sensitive to the throttle manners. I rode from London to the Isle of Man in really heavy rain the day after buying the bike and was still comfortable enough to leave it in sport mode for most of the time without any moments, even though the day before it felt pretty awful in greasy conditions on bumpy roads.
