1098 Michelin Pilot Road 4 Not Approved For 1098s?

  1. I need new tyres for my 1098s Tricolore. Most journeys are with wife on back or around London to get to any decent roads. (749r & 998s Bostrom are for fun.)

    Was going to get Michelin pilot road 4 as I have read good things about their grip & mileage, but my local tyre supplier says there are not approved for the 1098 and recommends pilot power 3.

    Anybody running pilot road 4's on their 1098?
     
  2. Hiya. Can't imagine any issues with the pilot 4,look at the Pirelli Angels ,not bad ,better feel than pilot 3 and decent in the rain,looks like they last well too,also look at Metzeler Z8,

  3. How can it not be compatible? Surely if they sell the right size and your not pushing the tyre on track days or racing I can't see it making any difference at all?
     
  4. I got road 2 rear and road 3 front on my 999. Same use as your 1098. Rides well on them.
     
  5. Ignore them and buy what you want imho.

    I got told all kinds of bollocks when I tried to purchase some more SC0 supercorsa qualifying tyres for road use when my local bike shop telephoned tyres suppliers.There not safe blah blah blah.So managed to find some on fleabay and took them to JHP.Rick told me they are fine for road use and will offer unbelievable grip just wont last as long as SC1 and SC2 types.

    Some of these tyre folks talk out there arse as ive already used a set and lasted me two summers and a winter without any problems.

  6. It does beg the question "approved by whom ?"

    However if Michelin states their PR4 isn't 'compatible' with the 1098 then it might be reasonable to ask them "why not ?"

    I believe in Germany tyres have to be TUV (?) approved for the specific vehicle.
     
  7. Erm...track SC are not ideal for road, although I have used them. Its heat cycle issues as much as how long to takes them to warm up

Well my last set of track SC0 lasted 2 summers use and a winter.Rode bike a lot so lots of heat cycles.Im sure if there was a problem JHP guys would warn me.Ill stick with Ricks advise and keep using SC0 when can find em as I love the grip and never had a problem with them.Even used them all winter and had lack of feel for first couple of mls (same as sc1 sc2)but after that they were great again.

    Why would a tour style tyre with superb wet grip not be 'approved'?

    It's just product positioning by the manufacturer, if I go on Michelin website and enter my multistrada it only recommends the pr4, does that mean a pilot power or 2ct won't work in a 190/55?

    Of course not.

    It's just that they catergorize the touring style tyre with a multi, hence they'll catergorize track / sticky compound tyres with the 1098/1198/1199

    I bet you if you look on pirellis site they'd recommend the supercorsa for your bike.

    A 190/55 tyre is just that, if you massively changed the size /circumference then it might adversely affect your TC(possibly) but that's about it

    I guess what they're maybe saying is that the pr4 isn't designed to hammer round a track, but if you're doing pure road miles why is it suitable for my bike putting out 150bhp at the back wheel 2 up and not yours?

  14. Your not far wrong there cranker lol since my good mate sold his R1 and I went to working part time.Used to rag the shit out of it every other weekend with him to Barmouth and back.Now just do a bit of commuting about and the odd little blast to quatt café.

    Probably for the best as bike is a old girl now and in better financial times I used to get through tyres, clutch packs , chain and sprockets like they were going out of fashion.

    To the OP id give the pilot road 4s a go as how bad can they be as damo has stated they seem fine on his bike.Not like your on a tuned 1098R on track days all the time.

  15. I'm sure they will be fine. Tbh I have never even checked if a tyre is recommended or not. Does it do what I want and in a size that fits. Yes to both, fit em!
