As some of you may know I was the unfortunate victim of a SMIDSY accident on Saturday 7th July, I'm not going to go over the details as I'm bored of telling the story over and over if I am honest and replaying it in my mind each time just makes things worse. Unfortunately for me after the impact with the vehicle me and the bike slid along the road into a wall and gate post which resulted in one destroyed, probably written of multi and a trip to hospital for me... Six hours in A&E and over a dozen x-rays, CT scan revealed numerous fractures and ligament damaged, broken bone in left ankle (plaster cast), cracked right femur at the knee where the inside ligament joins the bone (full length plaster cast) plus torn ligaments, 6 compound spinal fractures and finally suspect right shoulder rotator cuff damage, needless to say I took a beating. I suppose the good news is my gear saved my life, if it wasn't for my back protector I'm sure I'd be either paralysed or worse now and this was sub 30mph. The bad news is I was admitted to hospital due to my injuries and for the first few days I couldn't even move once the adrenaline had worn off, slowly but surely I managed to move and had an MRI scan top to tail to ensure nothing had been missed or misdiagnosed luckily my back injury just requires rest and no surgery. The hospital staff, nurses etc have a thankless task and looked after me throughout this painful time and soon had me back on my feet and on Monday I was discharged. Now starts the long task or recovery which for my legs is going to be 6-8 weeks in plaster but my right leg is going to take much longer due to the phsyio that it will need, my back is also going to take some time so I think at best it'll be 3 months but I suspect 6 months is more realistic. So no biking for me for the rest of 2012 so roll on 2013 and a new bike. Im pretty much confined to home currently so if anyone fancies coming round for a chin-wag let me know.
Jon, I'd love to get up, but you're too far from the M25 and my passport has expired : ) Glad to see you making progress tho.
Freak all in all good you still posting, all will heal or grow back and regarding riding this year by the looks of it you will not miss much
Get well soon lovely I know only too well about being at home and not able to do anything for myself for 6-8 weeks Try to keep your mind active I spent ages mulling everything over and the flashbacks would catch me unawares. Think I was depressed for weeks losing my dizzy was torture and never thought I would ride again. Get through these first few weeks a day at a time it's gawd damn frustrating If you need a vent give us a yell
I damaged my rotator cuff well over 10 years ago I never regained full strength in my right shoulder and it can still niggle now. Its a barstward of an injury
Yes it bloody is I'm on second injection and physio for my fractured shoulder The physio thinks I have a tear in my rota cuff
Howdo mate - sorry to hear of your off, for what its worth I'll share this: I too had an off many years ago (pillion) and suffered a triple compound right femur, smashed knee cap, and a smashed right elbow. Eight weeks later I was discharged and running around on crutches. All good. But - if I'm being honest I didn't know whether it was Christmas or Easter for the first fortnight, talk about wiped out, woke up the day after and found my right leg in traction, right arm in a cast and a drip in my left arm. Not a good day out. I guess what I'm trying to say is: By rights I should be dead and I certainly shouldn't have gone anyway near a bike again, but I did and I've fallen off a few times since too. Glad to hear you're of the same mindset. Get well soon
still on physio almost 2 yrs after shoulder dislocation. The most unstable joint in the body is the shoulder. may even have corrective surgery. CA-CHING££££££££ slow and steady wins the race withe the rehab, very slow and steady. Hang in there, stay positive
Best wishes and a swift recovery, Jon. I have been part of the way to where you are at right now but I think you have me trumped. Steady does it and don't believe them if they start saying, "Well you won't be able to do that anymore." cos it probably isn't true
That is bollocks mate. And if the rotor is done in, look for surgery; you're recouping anyway so why noy get everything trimmed at the same time I can recomend Gold for some classic comedy during the day, and comedy channel for two and a half men in the afternoon
Get yourself the box set of the Wire - all that criminal activity will make you feel better. Sorry to hear about the smash...
Freak, really sorry to hear of your off, and thankfully you did not sustain more serious/permanent/long term injuries than what you are now enduring. Best wishes on a speedy and complete recovery!
I'm really sorry about this too. I don't know that I should be frequenting this forum - it's a recipe for disaster. Freak, Funkyrimpler, Bradders, Dukebird (and probably another 10 who don't spring to mind right now) are all fucked up. Can't you all meet up somewhere for a bumper summer picnic (in the rain)? For all housebound convalescents at a loose end: learn Italian. It's a cool language, the mother tongue of Ducati and at least you might as well get something good and lasting out of your accident. Do an hour or 30 mins a day: you'll be spectacular and the envy of your mates when you make it down to the next WDW (which you will!). Of course you won't be able to speak it properly before you're healed - there's all the essential hand gestures to master which you'll be having trouble with with your buggered shoulders...
