Oil Leaking From Clutch Basket?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by gazzaevs, Jun 10, 2014.

  1. Hi Guys,
I've got oil leaking from somewhere, noticed oil around the clutch casing while out yesterday took it straight home to check it out, have cleaned up the casing in my workshop and had it running to see where it is coming from, i have an open clutch cover (picture), nothing appears to be leaking other than the clutch seems to be spraying oil while it is running, this doesnt happen for about five minutes, but there is a light spray of oil from the spinning clutch as it is running. Any ideas as what would be causing it? Some seal maybe behind the clutch basket? only thing i have done related to the oil is an aftermarket oil breather (picture) this is a nice trick looking part i added just for a bit of bling more than anything, but did notice the original oil breather had a reed valve in it? where as the new one is straight through, dont know whether this is doing a specific job that may have caused the oil problem?

  2. A couple of seal behind the basket, easy and cheap enough to do but a pain in the ass to get at..

As seen in this image, the large black on and small brown seal.

  3. hmmm, thought i might have to remove the clutch, got no problem with that, was looking to put a coloured pressure plate on anyway! hope this is the problem though, looks simple enough? will that seal pop straight out? thanks for the help.

  4. Yes easy to do, Id replace them both :) Can't see it could be anything else..

  5. Check the small oil seal in the end of the gearbox shaft that the pushrod passes through, as these are prone to leaking especially if the pushrod has been pulled out from the RH side.

The good news is that they are cheap and easy to replace. There is also a bearing behind it which, again is cheap but can be a pig to remove but this is likely to be OK, worth checking whilst the oil seal's out though.

Also make sure you fit this oil seal the correct way (lip pointing inwards) or it might leak again... :Meh:

  6. Thanks guys, ordered a clutch holding tool and a set of seals, as soon as they arrive I will crack on! Thanks again guys.

  7. I've got a bearings supplier close by, so will look at that, good tips, thanks.

  8. Hi guys, finally got round to removing the clutch basket, dukedesmo, you had it spot on I think, the pushrods seal looked like it was leaking, took the basket off just to check all other seals but everything else was clean and dry, posted a couple of pictures as well to show, but I do have one extra question guys, the clutch basket edges look serrated and burred over the edges, always thought these should be smooth and no serrations on the edges? (please check out photos), comments would be welcome. Thanks again.

  9. Basket is worn but I've seen worse, the one in my 916 for one although it's not burred over like yours but it is a steel basket and yours looks like an alloy job.

Hard to see exactly but it doesn't look too badly worn down from the untouched part? I'd remove the burrs (but leave the serrations or you'll just make it even looser) and re-use it.

  10. Thanks dukedesmo, appreciate all your help and replies.

  11. Hi guys, well replaced the pushrods seal and.....job done, no more oil being flung around from the clutch basket, problem now is there ALSO seems to be an oil leak behind the layshaft pulley wheel (picture) which must have been at the same time as the pushrods seal! What's the chances of that!!!! Looked up the exploded view of the layshaft, but there doesn't appear to be any seals behind the pulley wheel? Advise??? :(

  12. There is an oil seal in there. This is an old 900 Monster engine but I'm fairly certain the seal will be the same setup;

  13. Moved to technical help

  14. The lack of a reed valve in the replacement crank bearing could have some bearing on these oil leaks. The reed is there to help maintain a negative crankcase pressure. Without the reed the pressure will continually change through positive and negative pressures with each revolution.

  15. thanks for the info Derek, was wondering in the back of my mind if this was an issue, everything started after the oil breather fitment, wouldnt have guessed this would be the case!

  16. I've just replace plates on my 996 and thinking of doing the basket too as its pretty bad. Clutch works OK but have to pull well in to disengage and not sure if a new basket will change that. Anyway, have seen new ones on ebay OEM from moto rapido for £130 or aftermarket HDESA made in USA ones from UKnorth532 for £80. Anyone had experience of the copy ones?

  17. Derek, i think you were spot on with that! changed the oil breather back to the oem part, and guess what? no more leak!!! didnt expect that, thought if it leaked, then the seal would need replacing, but no more leak?? will keep an eye on it, but all seems fine, did a roughly 15 miles, and not the slightest run of oil. :)

  18. I'm pleased to hear that.
