Ford motor vehicles come standard now with a so called, snifter. Device that prevents the wrong nozzle from being inserted! Would be great if it was standard on mbikes too....but alas ford have a patent etc etc!
The local yoofs have a habit of swapping nozzles over on the forecourts. I know plenty of people that have been caught out by this jape. Little bastards
I put four litres of petrol into a diesel transit once. Filled up with diesel to the brim and pretended nothing happened. True to form it was absolutely fine ever after.
Im afraid to say I've done it, Vpower diesel next to Vpower petrol, it gets worse though it wasn't my bike. My mate was fitting a set of tyres to my bike at his garage and he said take my 1198 out and see what difference there is between mine and yours ,oh and do me a favour put some petrol in please. He wasn't the least bit bothered he said he gets cars in regularly miss fuelled all he did was syphon the diesel out ,run a small amount of petrol through then brimmed the tank. A year on and its never had a problem, he said he would keep quiet and not tell any of our mates ,not much, I got so much stick over that . I'm mega carfull now I don't ever want to go through that again. Oh it was on my birthday as well so I'm not likely to forget it in a hurry.
On the way to Imola, I think, with a few mates in a doormobile being driven by our mechanic/Ducati witchdoctor. We stop off at a service station somewhere in Italy and some numpty fills it with diesel. Well, it looked like a diesel sort of vehicle, but no! It was petrol. So we go another 400m down the motorway before it conks out. It is at this stage that I was mighty glad that the Ducati witchdoctor and Seat dealer was on board. Walked back to the service station, got some jerricans and siphoned the diesel out and replaced with petrol. Doormobile smoked for a few miles, but foot to the floor, soon burnt the crud off. End of story - all was right in the world.
How about writing 'Petrol' in permanent marker onto the inner ring under the fuel flap? Or inserting a laminated piece of dayglow card or plastic with the words 'Petrol' only on the inner ring of the petrol filler? As 'idrinkbeer' said most cars these days have Green discs around the inside of the fuel cap Green for petrol and Black for diesel. Personaly I just remember bike £15 to fill and 'Green' = Roar and music to ears. Car £90 to fill and 'Black' = sounds like tractor
how bout a square nozzle / filler for diesel? Could have been done years ago but there's money to be made out of these lil mishaps....
People make money out of these mishaps but if every petrol station in the UK had to roll out square nozzles the manufaturer of said nozzles and tank inserts would make millions in profit. My guess is it's just not been done because the percentage of mishaps are probably relatively low in the grand scheme of things, therefore it doesn't justify the multi million pound investement needed to make it happen. I know it's harsh but we all just need to pay a little more attention when we pull into the petrol station to fill up. Another way I find of not mixing it up with the bike is to make a mental note of sticking in the higher octane stuff it kinda stands out and as you ride into the station your thinking 'I got to put the high octane stuff in' it makes you look for it, if that makes sense.
I'd like to agree with you but having the VPower Nitro+ diesel pump right next to the unleaded isn't helping for the easily distracted, errrrr , not that I know , someone told me :Shamefullyembarrased:
High octane thinking is a good idea except for the fact that the plastic tanks on the dukes do not like high octane petroleum. They swell and distort over time.
