Hi. Have a 2001 M600, with no rev counter & single disc. What bits do I need ( off different models ?) to upgrade ? Would prefer Ducati clocks, not aftermarket. Will I need another brake master for twin discs ? Thanks. Lovely bike as is tho'...but don't want to over rev it.
For the rev counter, by an electronic one.............It will be cheaper and easier to fit than the mechanical one.
Ta. Would have thought that by 2001 the rev counter would pick up off the coils & there would be a twin clock binnacle off something else ( 900 ? ) to fit ? Just need to know which donor bike parts to source, especially for brake calliper etc..
Not sure on the later ones if there is a mechanical rev counter blanked off, as I dont think they do come off the coils. Go after market, but be careful to get the right one as not all will work with a twin
Even if the mechanical drive is blanked off (need a pic of the top right side of the horizontal head to be able to tell) the chances are there will only be a spacer on the camshaft rather than the worm drive gear. So that would mean buy the worm drive gear + drive pinion and boss (about £60 at least now, if all the Ducati price increase percentages are across the board); cable and tacho itself; plus a new silly camshaft nut, new oil seal and possibly a new cam / pulley bearing...... ....Then the fun starts fitting it........... For the brakes, have you got 'spare' caliper mounting lugs on the fork leg?
Yes, brake mounts are on fork leg, which made me think, & while it stops alright, the single disc looks a bit lonely... In my trolling, I'm sure I've seen 600 s with dual clocks...certainly ? 900 s...if the option is mechanical etc I'll not bother. Thought it would be a common upgrade for the sporting B road rider.. What do the DesmoDue boys do ? Thanks.
They use the 600SS engine as far as I am aware, which does have a mech tacho; but I have seen several with electronic ones and the mech drive blanked off. Actually if you have the drive location blanked off and can afford to buy the parts; doing the job itself is fairly easy apart from dealing with the silly pulley nut and getting the bearing out; however........ .........if it is blanked off you can, with a bit of fiddling with a mirror and a mini-Maglite torch; see if the camshaft worm drive exists........you can just see the actual 'teeth' if it is present........ .......in which case you would only need the pinion drive + boss and O-ring; plus the cable and tacho..........that would save a few bob.
most use after market rev counters, stack, veypor, all sorts taken off the coils. I do think tho 750 clocks may have had the same configuration and can be swapped and the later 600's are easy enough to put one on, but its been a while since I researched it an always ran older than 96 583s.
After I fitted a Monster engine and in my 600ss race bike I lost the ability to have a mechanical drive, so I fitted an electronic one from Elliot Design. It just need a live, earth, and a signal feed which I picked up from one of the coils or cdi - can't remember which but it was an easy job.
as far as I'm aware that is the only difference between engines of the same age. I think there were 3 incarnations of the 600 engine.
In another thread I mentioned that I had seen three 600 Monsters with a mech tacho........I should have found out if they were in fact SS engines, shouldn't I?
it's only the head that's different. you can stick an ss head on a Monster engine and you get mechanical drive. it's easier to wire a electronic one in though, so I suspect those engines had been replaced with ss engines for other reasons.
My Monster (900) has the tacho drive built into the head although there are no 'internals' just a blanking plug to stop the oil leaking out/dirt getting in. It is dated 1995 though, so maybe it was the older (or 900) only that had the facility? Unless of course it was originally an SS engine...
My M750 has a rev counter but it is not necessary. That is why the original design didn't have one. My 748 and event my 600SS definatley need them.
