1200 Gears Out Of Sync !? Fcuk Me What Next!?

  1. Still love it....but jeeezzz one thing after the other 5000 miles since new from December... just had exhaust replaced cos of valve sticking and now after trip back from france frigging gears are all over the show. When in Neutral its showing 2nd, when green light shows frigging things in gear, now showing 1st and its in Neutral... wtf?
    Pointed this out when having the exhaust done...needed resetting they said....did it...got 1/4 mile down the road fuck me I've got 2nd showing in Neutral again.....back I go...set it again...could be the sensor they said see how you go... worked fine for a while till I got near home and...yeh fucking thing playing up again. Rang em..said they would make a call to Mussolini see if they've had any reports of similar...still waiting for call back.....have any of you guys heard of this happening? Cheers
     
  2. I'd only be worried if the electronics use gear indicator for anything, like the engine braking on a 899. Otherwise who needs a gear indicator lol

    Tempting fete but other than corrosion I have had no issues on mine after 5500 miles, but I've had product in the past like a new Saab which broke every other week! Friday production run...

Nah.. your right Brad I don't need an gear indicator to let me know what gear I'm in....but it won't start unless the green neutral light is showing and it's a little nerve wracking when your parked up and want to fire it up before mounting and the fucking thing jolts forward because its in gear... just annoying

  4. Just rang em.. says they have had issues with the sensor on the back... one on order...looks like yet another waste of a day getting it fitted.....:Rage:
     
  5. Not had this issue on mine (yet), but can imagine it would piss me off no end? For reference, this 38 yr old gear position indicator switch was working perfectly, even in this shitty state - not everything gets better with progress, does it?

  7. Exactly the same thing happened to me a month ago, bikes been in the fucking garage for 3.5 weeks!!!
    Back tomorrow, hopefully, new clocks etc!!!!
     
  8. Has anyone else managed to fix this?

    My bike has always showed a dim left hand indicator LED lit if any other LED is lit. E.g. low fuel light.
    But now the bike is showing neutral when in gear.
    This allows the bike to start, not good if you're not on it and you press start.

    I cannot locate the information I need to fix this.

    On the wiring diagram it shows as a variable resistor, but where is it?
    EDIT: Now found!!

    Further the workshop manual talks about a neutral switch, but the wiring diagram shows it as not connected.

    Page 276 is a work of fiction.
    It discusses removing the neutral switch (called a Nipple on the wiring diagram...probably a mid life crisis in technical writer).
    Shorting to earth and checking to see if the light goes out. Utter b0llocks.
    As soon as you remove the connection to this "Switch" the "gear Sensor error" message appears on the screen.

    Anyone actually worked on this issue?

    I believe that the sensor probably has a plunger that is pushed. Depending on the amount of push this indicates which gear or neutral. It does this by varying the return voltage to the BBS. I assume this plunger can be worn. I need to get a fuel injector type socket and remove this sensor to investigate further.

  9. This has been a real Issue! Was hoping to get this fixed before going to WDW but no such luck....still decided to go as wasn't that bad at time....however having been in this situation for quite some time it appears to have got worse...from 1st into 2nd and then showing the neutral light throws the hole thing tits up in fits and starts on the throttle in certain situations is quite fucking dangerous and I'm well pissed off especially having her indoors on as well. No call from dealer to say part was in....had to make call myself and no can do till the 20th...thinking of writing to customer service....my next duke won't be from them....

  11. That procedure would be fine if it was a neutral switch but it's not, and as you say bollocks. I did wonder if there was a neutral switch AND a gear sensor as one day my bike would indicate N but the light wouldn't light. It did this several times over the course of the day but has been ok since. As a result I checked and there is just a gear sensor. It's shown a potentiometer on the diagram with a supply, ground and an output. I guess like any pot it can get a break in the track or a poor contact between the track and the wiper. Like a noisy volume control.

  12. Agreed, but it could just be mechanical wear on the part that touches the gears or oil/moisture ingress?
    The connectors (wiring loom) have square section needle like pins, consequently It's very hard to get an electrical contact to measure anything.
    I worried that stuffing anything into the socket part (so I can take a reading) of the connector could damage the shape of the contact material, causing yet another issue when I refit it back in the loom. I think I need to invest in some very long sharp probes for my Fluke.
     
  13. To get a connection to socket contacts I usually snip of the legs from a spare resistor, semiconductor or whatever that has an appropriate sized wire and form a small post that insulated croc clip leads can grip. Easier that probes.

    Resistor legs...how long ago was it!! SMD man SMD..
    Joking aside you want something that's going to make positive contact especially if you are going to measure resistance.
    I've literally millions of things in my workshop and I struggled to find anything small enough to get into the socket side in a positive fashion.
     
  15. Later in the week I'm going to find out how much the replacement gear sensor is. If it's cheap enough I just going to change it.

    This issue is vital to the safe and correct running of the motorcycle.
    The MTS1200 use this information to select the correct fuel and spark map.
    You have different maps for the back and front cylinders and for each gear.
    If this display is showing the incorrect gear then so is the ECU giving the wrong fuel / advance/retard.

    I'd love to know which map it's using when I driving around in neutral??:Wacky:
     
  18. ACT, from what you describe this sounds like the neutral light problem that early dashes had, in that it is on sometimes but dim, and may also come on with high beam, flashers, etc.
    Is that what your seeing,or is it definitely the gear indicator ?

  20. According to my memory the early dashes (mine is a 2010 bike) had the issue with the indicator (n/s) showing dimly when another light/LED is on. Since I've had the bike I've always had that issue, but it never bothered me.

    Now I've got Neutral LED fully lit and/or the wrong gear showing.
    Sometimes its ok, but once the bikes been running for 30 minutes to an hour the fault returns.
    Shows Neutral when I know it's in first or second.
