899 About To Order A 899 What To Look Out For ?

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by rjl72, Jul 8, 2014.

  1. Hi, just selling my 2003 748r to replace with a 899.
    Any pitfalls ?
    Anyone running Akrapovic exhausts ?
Are the Termignoni worth the change from standard ?

    Thanks for advice
    Thoughts please :)

    Cheers Russ

  2. Its been a hard decision but just want a bike that's a bit more user friendly !

  3. The 899 is a great bike. Just don't get a graphics package like mine otherwise I'll be gunning for you :)

  4. only issue i have with mine is the front brakes being a bit spongy still
have taken it back once, and still not 100% happy with them, but doesn't seem to be a common problem.
other than that tis a great bike out the box

  5. Your R whilst a nice bike will feel very dated in comparison, I've gone with termis and am pleased.
Not seen the akra's on an 899 so can't compare in the flesh but having had akra's on my 848 if they'd been around in November when I bought the bike I'd have gone akra's.
Needs a tail tidy from day one as the stock thing is hideous.
Swap the seat cowl for a colour coded one and maybe some Oberon foot pegs as the stock ones are shite.

  6. Cheers guys, tail tidy top off the list then !

  7. My brakes feel quite spongy. Quite a lot of movement then bang it hits you. And I've had a few false neutrals. But other than that what a machine.

  8. I don't know if it helps but when they updated the daytona 675r even with the same calipers and master cylinder, many complained about a slight 'mushy' feel on initial applications. The difference was the addition of ABS and it seems it may just be a 'quirk' of modern bike ABS systems? I think most are Bosche, they seem to have the market share.

  9. Corrosion would be the top of my list, brake pipe ends, ABS rotors, calliper bolts, tyre valves, alloy spacers on front wheel, but the most concerning would have to be the paint flaking off the fork knuckle, dealer reckons it's what I've been using to clean the bike. I might add my triumph STR is 1yr old treated to the same cleaning regime and has covered 6000 miles in all weathers and doesn't have a mark on it

  10. I have to say moto Rapido's demo is looking very 2nd hand indeed! All the above, corroded brake lines etc. Deffo not a fair reflection but I think they need looking after (to be fair so does my 848 and the 748 had lots of flaking paint!)

  11. I guess its possible, but not my first bike with ABS
my old zzr1400 had it, and don't recall having this issue, but that was 4 year ago to be fair
previous bike the CBr1000RR didnt, brakes were sharp
so coming from that to this is definitely noticeable

  12. Wind the span adjuster out and see if that has an impact.

  13. That's not going to change the initial feeling of air in the system though is it? Apart from giving u more travel to move passed and 'pump' the brakes up.

  14. Yes it does on mine, 848, monster, 916, multi, gixer all the same especially with radial fitted. Goes from back to bar with lots of feel to solid but masses of bite and power. On track I wind all the way out and can barely reach it, on road several notches back. Costs nothing to try

  15. not sure what would be worse though
    levers I cant reach
    or brakes that feel spongy
    ;)
    but will give a go

  16. I have to shut throttle and roll hand forward to reach brakes, so know what you're saying ;)

  17. what to look out for..........about 300 cc's...

  18. Thats not good re the above about the finish quality, id not be happy if i bought one.

As for a dealer telling you its the cleaning products, i dont buy that. Next thing hw'd be telling you is to use Ducati Shampoo :Wideyed:

  19. You must have a Multi, do you? ;)
