900ss Oil Sender Switch

  1. My bike needs a new oil pressure sender switch(I hope). I`ve read that a VW Polo sender switch is way cheaper and will fit but from which model/year?
Everywhere I`ve tried want more info than "errm, it`s for a VW Polo, not sure of the year/model, I`m gonna use it on a 1993 Ducati 900ss!"
It doesn`t seem to be a part kept in stock, so "yeah, one like this" won`t work either.

  2. seem to think one for a vauxhall agila is the same (hope i spelt that right )
but not sure if that is the same as yours thinking ........
1993 and 1999 not sure if the same item ?

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. take your old sender unit into a decent motor factors store and they should be able to match it with one out of stock, it will be a common generic part rather than some special ducati part

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  4. I got an Intermotor 50950 one from my local motor factor, (think it was for an Audi) to fit my 1995 900 SS.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  5. Or you could fit an oil pressure gauge or combined temp/pressure type..............Can be obtained in electric or capillery versions.

  6. Thank you antonye, just what I needed.

The engine is fine, no nasty noises. My "I hope" comment was just me making light of the situation.
I know why the pressure switch failed, it`s because I mentioned I was thinking of selling the bike soon whilst stood next to it.
    That`ll teach me.

  7. The oil pressure sensor is a bit like the relays - they are mechanical switches that will wear over time.
Ducati really should replace some of these items, regardless of whether they are working, at the big interval services.
IMHO changing the relays at 12k miles / 2 year services and maybe the oil pressure switch at the same time would save countless problems we've seen on this forum and others, and would improve the reliability of the brand (or at least the perception of!) no end, all for a couple of quid extra on a service ... probably an extra £10 or 2%!!

  8. I can confirm that the oil pressure switch from a Vauxhall Aguila will fit a M600 carby Monster for about half the price of the Ducati item! I've not had cause to take the switch of my '93 900ss, but I can't see why it shouldn't as the Monster engines are basically identical.

By the way, I've gone through about 4 duff switches over the last 11 years on the Monster at about £26 a time. Funnily enough, I did re-fit a couple of the old ones on the last occasion, having given them a good squirt of WD40 up the working end to see if it would free-up a potential sticky return spring. Guess what . . . they worked fine for a couple of days! Not had any issues with the Vauxhall part over the last year.

  9. More like a 10th of the price...

  10. Ok, got off my arse and found the invoice from last year (2013). Main Vauxhall dealer price (probably cheaper if you go to a motorfactors) £8.88 including VAT, part number is D06D4. As mentioned it fits an M600 Monster, but I'm pretty sure it'll be the same for most Ducati's.

  11. Al, have you found such a thing and fitted it?

  12. Yes, on five cars at various times.........Most auto instrument sellers have them........Demon Tweeks have got Racetech and SPA for capillary and electrical..........digital and analogue for electrical ones...........you only need an adaptor in the oil pressure switch thread...and you can still keep the oil pressure switch if you want to.

However, I wouldn't fit any capillary ones to a bike, unless the gauge isn't mounted on the yoke........although you can introduce a coil into the capillary tube, by wrapping it around a pencil, say; there is too much movement in the yoke and the tube for it to break easily.
