Got fed up trying to find a small guard for the top mounted oil cooler on my SS, so I slung this together today........ Just have to bend the top tag down (to stop it falling forward) once I know where the bend needs to be and add a pop rivet in the top (to stop it from moving back)..........
There was somthing similar on my 750 when I got it, junked it as there was god knows what stuck behind it and the cooler was blocked would, but the bikehad been used in all weathers.
It had to be small as possible, 'cos there isn't a lot of room up where the cooler is..... .......it has been done so that it is about 6mm minimum away from the cooler so that most crap should fall out at the bottom..... ....and hopefully the bent back bit at the bottom will stop a lot of small stones getting dumped on top of the engine area behind the front cylinder.......
The brackets are ally and polished, so why paint the rivets which are ally as well? (and who the F is going to see it?) And nearly right about a fireguard...................
was actually looking at some mesh at the weekend at newark thinking of making a guard for my oil cooler just couldnt find any i liked the look of ( fussy ba*%$d) was thinking stainless ..... have some in the shed but a bit heavy duty and the holes too small
I had some ally mesh and some painted steel mesh, but no stainless and I couldn't be arsed to go and get some........ I used the steel mesh because I reckoned the ally was too weak.....this is quite rigid..... .....so I clipped the corner of the mesh in a vice and blowlamped (set fire to) the paint until it fell off............wire brushed it thoroughly and filed away every sharp edge..... Used the edge trim that was originally on the mesh and did the same with the blowlamp......fixed it with a punch down the back face of the edge trim...... Couldn't find any silver spray on my shelves so I used gold and lacquered it before the gold had hardened, to take the edge of the gold......... If it rusts, I will either repaint it or chuck it away......... Still, considering I made it without removing any of the fairing to get at the cooler........
trim that was already on the mesh .......... it was part of a fire guard wasnt it my nan had one like it
Had to modify it a bit.............I have a front mudguard extension which is clipping the guard under braking (in fact I discovered the exetension was clipping the very bottom of the oil cooler without the guard)............so an inch was taken off the extension and have formed a curve/cut- out in the bottom of the guard but it still covers the cooler...
You're right AL, yours looks like 10 x 4,4 x 1 thick 32% open area Diamind Mesh where as the fire guard is clearly 1.67 aperture x 0.45 dia woven mesh. Know your mesh Johnboy. Cheers Gaz
[/QUOTE] Yep, very.........but that's why our engines run and yours had to be thrown away.......
