Project SS is a go.

  1. So got the SS back home on Saturday. It went to Poland via some other places and did about 1500 miles before belt snapped. It was never cleaned. Got it back after belt snap was fixed. Used it all winter as is despite clear signs it needs valves done. Again never cleaned so white spots are all over it now. I also had an ups on it so some history. Bike still starts at the button despite the abuse me, and Michel thrown at it. Perfect example of unreliable ducati there :D It is now at 37k miles and if I did not care about starting issues due to valves needing work it would do another 6k the least. BTW I think Michelle and me never cleaned it wonder if previous owner did :D

Plan is strip to engine so heads can come off. Heads stripped so valves can be re-sited. Then heads and cylinders powder coated black. With small bits and pieces powder coated red (valve covers for example). As injectors are visible despite panels on I will try and get that powder coated black.
Frame will be red, front sub-frame red, hangers black, swing-arm black (possibly as forks stay silver so might leave swing-arm silver), yokes black and few other bits and pieces here and there. If cash allows powder coat rims red as current red paint-job is scarred.
Panel's need repair and repaint after December ups but original colour of Senna Grey stays. I will probably add senna lettering across the panels and 58 will be in there as it suits the bike.

Engine wise full service with valve re-sit. I am also thinking about high-comp pistons, obviously open up airbox and some nice sounding cans.

Other then that general cleaning and bolt replacement (so far was lucky nothing is sized).

So let the fun commence: - side note I plan to do most of it alone so it might be quite funny :D

SS looks like this for now:

This brings us to my first question, injectors. Did not deal with those yet.
First can I take just the injector unit and ecu to a ducati dealer to do tps reset or does entire bike need to go?
Secondly look at it, inlets from airbox are filthy, there was sand and leaves in there!! Finally they are visible from outside (3rd picture is what stick out) so wanted to powder-coat them as well or the least throttle pulley. Can they be split easy and then put back together?

Last picture is that pressure regulator? If so what is the PSI coming out?

  2. cant wait for her to be bought back to her best, she was a real looker.keep us informed with piciiies, she does look at bit vulnerable undressed.

  3. She does what surprises me is 37k miles, no signs of oil leaking anywhere, still works despite state she is in. It just feels like they can go on forever.

  4. So your saying it broke a belt and was still useable with just a belt replacement? I did not think the valve train could survive that. Great news if it can. Edit, Both tdc's are safe....Nevermind

  5. You need to lavish some TLC on that baby Luca 

Looking forward to the make over

  6. dont think it will be a 60 minute makeover either.

  7. Luck dependent. I was quite ok as valves just kissed pistons so valve guides and valves was all it needed.

  8. So today's plan was to strip everything that goes in to BLACK box so:

    - disassemble throttle assembly at injector end
    - pegs
    - small brackets all over
    - top & bottom yoke
    - clip-ons bracket
    - clip-on raisers
    - coil brackets
    - fairing panel brackets
    - stand

Remove some other bits and bobs.

    Failed all together.

Started from throttle bodies. What was to be 3 min job got me very angry after 2h.
This is what I wanted off:

However encountered first seized bolt and seized clip. Could not lift the clip as there was not much of it for almost 40 min. Then when I finally did had to undo two bolts but someone had a brilliant idea of fitting torque bolts. Obviously one got stuck. That was 30 min gone. Finally had to remove a very small spring not damaging it. After that only one bracket off .... yes like it wanted to move all covered in rust and salt. Could not even apply heat to it as to close to injector that took me to just over 2h only for 4 small brackets!!!!!!!

    Few questions:
Any idea what is the size of those rose joints (gear linkage one on SS):

Is it better to powder coat this or buy new, how much are new one's?

Also how much are new exhaust studs?

Finally for fun estimate how long will it take me to remove the front wheel?

  9. Looks like a big tin of WD40 is going to be required

  10. fk me Lucaz, I've got cast disks that look better than that after a winter in the garage!!

  11. It was not in the garage until a week ago (about).

  12. It looks like you really have your work cut out for you. It looks like the work of salt water on a hot bike, ( does the UK salt the roads in winter?). Stop the dissasembly. Bathe that thing in wd 40 as mentioned above, and tap fasteners with a brass drift, for a few days. It is time worth spending. Change name of thread to.."Dissasembly of a Ducorrodie" Cyrus.

  13. An hour and 30 min Luca for front wheel
    That's one sad SS

  14. Less fun that way, nah should be ok. Front spindle is moving, rear look ok. Only engine bolts/screws now make me worried.

  15. Can i share your gulp.front wheel should be off in 5 mins max,did the last time, chain looks filthy!get some paraffin on it....I think i can safely suggest i probably cleaned Erica, yes that was her name, maybe once or twice more than you................so there......go on get here looking bright and shiny again....she still has it.

  16. Michel couque shame on you.
Look at the poor SS that's painful to see

  17. Chain looks like this as I gave up on dry chain lube that goes AWOL after 100 miles. Chain on bike looks filthy but is about the only part not rusty.

  18. Michel you have piqued my curiosity as to how you got the front wheel off your SS in 5 mins. I've just done it on my SS and at best it was a 40 mins effort

  19. Zimbo and myself managed to swap front and rear in under 5 minutes on a 1000SS during an endurance race. You need to speed up there Luca.

Unless you are sorting that bike out for the fun of it, I would have a serious think about what you are going to do to it and how much you will spend. With that mileage, even in really good nick, you would be pushed to get £1500 for it. You'll never get it back to good condition though as most parts are too far gone, so cleaned up I reckon it's got to be £1000 tops. You may get £500-£800 for it broken for parts. However, a bit of cleaning and ACF50 and you've got a half decent winter hack.

It's cheaper to touch up paintwork with a rattle can than getting things powder coated too. Many of the furry parts will clean up well using a brass brush and brake cleaner, then finish off with ACF50 and a bit of Scotchbrite.

I know from first hand experience how the costs can escalate. I'm in the middle of tidying up my 900SS and with the cost of the bike and the work done so far it's already more than it would have cost to buy a really tidy one. It's fun though and I'm enjoying it so push on if that's your rwason for doing it.
