Nova Or Corse Gearbox 2008 1098r

  1. Looking for a Race gearbox, Nova or Corse to fit to my 2008 1098R

    I've spoken to flyinL and he's overseas and can only accept a money transfer ,
    I'm not too keen on doing so,
    Nova are out of stock and wont build until they have enough to justify a run, i don't think that will happen now the 1199 is the bike everyone is racing ,my best bet is race team surplus i think,
    I've spoken to a few of the dealer network that ran 1098's before in BSB and hopefully they will get back to me soon,

  3. I would go for nova box. corse units still fail with quickshifters.

  5. Don't mind me asking, but how much is the 1x98 Nova box? I've been contemplating options to improve the gear spacing on my R.

  7. It's £2250 Plus VAT,
    Now that's a lot more than i was planning to spend on a gearbox mod ,
    However its a lot of hours in the workshop to fit a gearbox,
    If i'm going to be using it on track with a quickshifter then it might be prudent to spend a little bit more now rather than take the cheaper option & have it fail then take it back in to be fixed,

    The bike has 207 at the crank & its in for a Power Commander & dyno set up just now so it might have a wee bit more when I get it back,

    Nova have the reputation of being pretty bombproof,
    If you get your name down they might make them a bit quicker !

  9. No , Ive been told its around 10 hrs in the workshop,
    But I've been running the standard gearbox & quickshifter for 4000 track miles,
    Its due to go bang i think , I'm lucky to have got away with it for so long .

  10. This is the mail I got back from Nova at the end of May:

    "Thank you for the enquiry.
    We are currently taking orders for the next batch of 1198 gearboxes which are about to go into production. They should be available at the end of july.
    If you would like to be added to our production list please email your full details.Please let us know if you are an ACU license holder.
    The cost of the gearbox is :£2250.00 + carriage + VAT Grand total :£2714.40
    We look forward to hearing from you.

    I'm not on the list as my gearbox is being rebuild with standard parts, and I most certainly will not be using the quick shifter when I get it back.

    Did you blow yours up, what happened ?
    I know a few guys with the Nova fitted, they both said its the best mod they have done,
    It was Mick i spoke to today, the workshop is flat out due to being the middle of the race season hence the September production date,Perhaps if he got a few more names it would speed things up ?
     
  12. Hi Ducatisti,
    Its a bit of a sore point, but basically its a road bike 1198sp fitted with the factory quick shifter that has mangled the gearbox at low miles, it used to jump out of gear (third mainly) when hard on the power out of corners but sometimes would drop out of gear going into corners (that was the last straw) at 90 -100 mph.
    I personally have only put 800miles on the bike its in great condition with service history 4.5K miles total, so I guess I've just been unlucky or the previous owner was a gear crunching heavy footed chump.

  13. I was speaking to my dealer about the SP gearbox/quickshifter as my mate has just bought one,
    He hasn't had any back with gearbox problems,
    I've never ridden a factory quickshifter but you would think they would be set up to protect the box as much as possible ?,
    I know a mod for the 08 1098R is to fit an 1198 box as they addressed the earlier issues and fitted stronger components,
    I know someone who wrecked a Nova on an 1198S ,not sure of the exact history,
    I suppose you can blow anything up if you try hard enough :)

I think you are going in the right direction with a Nova box if you are planning on serious track use, the problem with the SP gearbox / shifter is the combination of wide ratios and a preset ignition kill times that can not possibly work at all revs and torque, having said that its great fun using the QS on the road at a steady to fast pace, but as anyone who has raced will know the difference between a fast road rider and a fast track rider is like night and day.
    Ducati themselves have almost admitted a QS on a twin with a lot of torque maybe a step to far.

  15. Which dealer did you talk to?
    I asked MR this very question, and Wilf said that there was no difference between the 1098R and 1198 gearbox.
     
  16. What year is your R ?,
    The 2008 R is well known for blowing up gearboxes if used with a quickshifter,
    The ratios on the 1198 are the same but the weak points were addressed ,
    So yes the ratios are the same but the boxes produced after 2009 were stronger,

  17. Hey guys, interesting topic, just bought a 1098R with 4.000km road use and converted into track bike immediately with just full racing Termi's. Took it to Misano few weeks ago and wasnt happy with the gearbox at all and i am also thinking about an engine blueprint.
    I am considering the Nova box but i am also sceptical about fitting a QS...lots of controversy on this issue!
    Not planning to do more than 3-4 track weekends per year (in Italian and French major tracks as I live in Switzerland).
    Not sure exactly about the outcome of the discussion above so i would appreciate sharing with me your experiences (your opinions about MotoRapido as well).

  18. Mine is a 2008. I use an HM quickshifter (not the DQS). Mine hasn't blown up in 8000 miles use (mostly by me). People talking of blowing up gearboxes only provide anecdotal stories of others/theirs. I reckon that most broken gearboxes are achieved through cackhanded abuse mostly. Speak to the experienced technicians who rebuild these boxes and they can tell of what is different between them (2008/9)... there are no differences (at least according to Moto Rapido).

    You make a statement that the 2009 gearboxes are stronger... is this just anecdotal, or can you highlight technically engineered differences between them to support the statement? (this is a genuine query as I would be very interested to know what the differences are - and I can then tell Wilf that he's been telling me porkies! :D)
