Dodgy Rs Frame On Ebay?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Exige, Jul 14, 2014.

  1. And that's just the start price!!! Just in case there's more than one loony bidding!

Looks like he's broken the whole bike too...

  2. Phil always has a few nice bits for sale and knows his stuff. sometimes he on the top end on price, but not known for selling dodgy stuff at all.

  3. Does it not look Dodgy to you? Stood out a country mile to me...

  4. if its a genuine RS frame (welding and tubing giveaway) it would come with no number. Its been fettled indeed.

  5. It even looks like underneath the add on plaque has been attacked where the old number might have been - also frames from this time had 13 digits for Europe and 17 for the USA I think, not 14?

  6. I do not know the seller but just read the description and he says:

The frame has VS mark on the plate by the headstock indicating Ducati origin.
There is a registration number as well on the frame though this look added on, assumed for import needs.

I am by no means an expert to know if it is an original 998RS frame but at least he mentions that the number is an add on.

  7. Which two numbers does he mean - I read it as a smokescreen for the dodgy plate, especially as it has the wrong number of characters. Didn't know the seller was reputable - but something seems wrong...

  8. A member here, I think.

  9. Phil is a good guy in my book.

  10. Maybe he is - just looked dodgy to me otherwise I wouldn't have posted - member or no member, the headstock looks tampered with underneath the somewhat heath robinson plate and the number has the wrong amount of digits from what I understand. Maybe he can clarify.

  11. I know the bike that Phil has stripped down. It is a RS frame with correct VS markings. The additional plate appears to have been added in order to export the bike as it left the UK for the Far East for a while. The ZDM number would be needed in order to carry out some form of registration as far as I know....

  12. So is it a made up number?

  13. That I don't know for sure. A chassis number can be anything you want if you register it to a virgin frame. Spondons, Harris for instance. Just the same applies to a race frame. The pukka ZDM numbers are issued by Ducati for sure, but my understanding is that the plate needed to be added to enable it to be exported. The ZDM prefix may have been chosen to make life easier as it would be recognised as a Ducati identifier.

  14. Japan?

  15. Dunno fella. As far as I know, the bike went to Hong Kong, then came back over here.

  16. Just checked it against pictures of a 998RS frame and it is different all over in the small detail, could be due to differences in manufacture but along with the dodgy frame number it's looking doubtful. Not saying he's a fraudster, just what he's selling is dubious to say the least.

  17. If he's un-aware of the discrepancies and he's a decent Ducati Forum type chap known to some - has anyone highlighted this post to him yet so he can at least re assess his advert? :Angelic:
