1200 Urgent!!! Vibration Issues!

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by DukeXTC, Jul 16, 2014.

  1. I'm going to the South of France on Friday and since changing the front tyre to a PR4 yesterday, I'm getting noticeable and numbing vibrations through the bars and footpegs. I took the bike back to where I had the tyre changed and they tested the balancing and it is OK. They tightened the engine mounting bolts and the vibes through the pegs are better but there is still a definite buzz through the bars. If you get up to speed and then pull the clutch in the vibes disappear. At the moment I doubt I'll get to Folkestone, let alone the Cote d'Azur and back.

Any ideas? Help me Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only help!

  2. is the tyre fitted wrong way round?

  3. Nope

  4. hard to know really then,.is it all revs/speeds etc ?
    mudguard fouling,twisted forks,unseated bearings,calipers stuck.

vibration through pegs would normally ,initially, make me check the chain/drive sprocket/rear sprocket, engine mounts tbh.
i wouldnt normally initially associate vibration through pegs to be at the front, engine mounts and rear end for pegs and bars vibeing engine/exhaust mounts etc.

but if only since tyre change then..pffer,sorry,without seeing it n that, dunno.

  5. Put the he bike on stands and check the disks. Spin the wheel and check that they run straight. Its possible they took a knock while the wheel was out.

While you're there, check that the wheel doesn't move laterally. Spacing? Also check the pinch bolts and axle nut. Check the bottom of the fork - who had that issue with cracked Ohlins?

  6. How did they lift the front to get the wheel out?

Any damage to the underside of the bike? Engine bash plate fitted ok? Not loose?

  8. If it goes away when you pull the clutch in then it doesn't sound like it's anything to do with the tyre does it?

Personally I'd have a close look at the chain - if it's slack then you can get vibes under load (which might disappear if the clutch is in and you're coasting)...

  9. The vibrations are noticeable through the bars at standstill and ticking over, and when rolling at 3-4k prm and particularly at 7K +rpm. The discs seems to be true. It's all a major fucker because I've been planning this trip for months and this problem rears its ugly head 2 days before I go. I could try to see if Ducati Aylesbury can have a look at it tomorrow but I don't fancy my chances. Keep your fingers crossed for me. :(

  10. yep fingers crossed for you.
standstill eh,and enough to vibe the bars and pegs, that would push me to the motor/exhaust mounts, tank mounts, periphial mounts(rad, sidestand, shock, swingarm etc),then onto the frame, looking for a fracture somewhere.
assuming motor is smooth n not running lumpy/out of sync.

  11. I had a similar sensation when the rubber stopper on the centre stand wore out. They harden with the heat and burn through. A new one sorted.

  12. thats a good one ian, does seem as though itd be something in contact with the frame vibrating etc for it to happen at standstill and feed through to the bars n pegs.

  13. SO far I've tightened engine mounts, swingarm, front axle and pinch bolts, main stand bolts, shock absorber top mount, subframe bolts, bash plate and anything else I can see and all to no avail. I'm gonna turn at Ducati Aylesbury first thing tomorrow and pray that they can squeeze me in.

I also looked the stand rubber but that wasn't it either.:Banghead:

  14. I reckon it's fucked.
