1200 Upgrading The Garmin 220 To A 660

  1. Slightly different (I think) question about Sat Nav's.
I have the Ducati branded Garmin Zumo 220, it came as standard on my 2012 1200S Touring and it was fitted by the dealer.
It has been great but recently started to show error messages about "accessory not supported" and xmreceiver not configured"? and sometimes even switches itself off. Only been happening when it's raining (so far) and I don't have any wd40 with me. I don't usually go out when its raining :) but sometimes cant be avoided such as when touring.

I am looking at the Garmin 660, is it an easy swap over?
It's the electrical wiring that is my main concern, will I need to rewire it or can I use the existing wiring from the 220?

  2. Can't answer your question directly, but my Ducati satnav (Nuvi 510), which I think is the same unit as you describe, but stamped differently (?) has also been popping up those XM Receiver and Not Supported Accessory messages, but on the last trip, gave up the ghost in terms of the External Power Supply.

Having chopped off the Mini USB Up connector, the wiring is still giving out 5v, so the loom connector and voltage controller is still working and I suspect the connector had become worn, breaking the connection and giving these random errors before failing?

I fitted a twin outlet/direct to battery USB port to my bike and the satnav works from that ok, except that on start up, it shows it being connected to a PC, before switching to normal usage/charging mode (must be the additional connections in the USB connectors?).

So, I am going to fit a new Mini USB Up connector to the original wiring (have to identify the power connection first) and see how that goes?

So, in a long winded way, I am saying that I can't see any reason why you couldn't splice the power lead from a 660 cradle into the existing Ducati satnav wiring, to get the ignition on/power up - but then I am no electrician!

  3. I'd try upgrading the firmware on the satnav in the interim. Garmins release new updates and if you have neglected to keep up to date, they do drift a little from optimum. In simple terms, all sorts of messages and data gets added to the stream of info they take in and only the latest firmware knows what to do with it all so older units running legacy firmware struggle.

  4. I had similar problems twice on my Zumo 550. On both occasions they were replaced by Garmin despite being outside warranty. I think they are a bit flaky...

  5. I did have the Zumo 220 set-up on my bike, minus the actual satnav and decided to 'upgrade' to the 660. One thing I did find was that the 220 cradle simply won't work, it's far too small, but you can detach the Zumo connector and provided you get a new mount to which you can attach the Zumo connector, you can retain the cabling, which is behind the LHS upper panel where it attaches to the tank shroud.
Even if you don't to retain the cabling preferring to change the satnav over completely, depending on the preferred mount location/arrangement, it's dead easy to either splice into or to clip in a connector onto this wiring loom section, which operates based on the ignition being on, so is definitely the easier way to go.

By all means give me a shout if you want to, I can tell you what I did, using a Telferizer mount, connected into the wiring loom, etc, etc.
    Really happy to help out.
Loads of additional expertise on this front on this forum here though, so undoubtedly you will only have to ask. :upyeah:

  6. Thanks.
I never thought of using the warranty for some reason, but the bike is only 23 months old and it turns out that the GPS is covered by the 2 year Ducati warranty. so Snells are getting a replacement for me.

Don't know if it will be covered by the extended warranty though?
