1200 Crash Protection Kit And Crash Bobbins?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by JimboP, Jul 21, 2014.

  1. Yesterday I bought a 2012 Multistrada 1200 S Touring and I'm pretty much over the moon. It's my first bike (yes, I know, I know) and whilst i'm going to continue to be very careful, I can't help but think that i'm going to drop it horribly at some point. I've just ordered the crash protection engine bar kit and my question is: is there any point in getting crash bobbins too or won't they fit/be necessary?

    Sorry for the stupid question.

  2. Have the GT crash bars on my 2012 which replaced my R&G crash aeroblades. Unfortunately the thread on the crash bars is metric fine and the R&Gs is metric course. I also tried the R&G engine bar and that doesn't fit either. Andy

  3. Ok cool. I'm assuming the crash bars are more protective than the aero bobbins, so hopefully I've done the right thing by opting for the bars over bobbins?

  4. Good question that I cannot answer without actually dropping the bike. I believe that the crash bars will be more effective for those minor shit moments and I hope in the eventuallity of a full drop the bike will slide where the crash bungs might dig in ending up in a washing machine tumble. Having said that, the crash bungs on an R1 at Brands that ceased going up the hill to Druids certainly reduced the damage to the frame, tank and panels. Andy

  5. Get the R&G (or others) spindle bobbins - even in a slow drop they can save you dinging those expensive fork bottoms!

  6. I've also fitted R&G protection to the rear wheel nut plus a skid protector to the really exposed water pump, which does stick out a bit.
I've opted for the R&G aero CP set-up across the engine mounts, I've always used their stuff, as it's my preference although thankfully I've not had to test any of it in earnest for quite some time!:Banghead:

Famous sodding last words, now watch this space for a Wilts' Mutli mis-hap from yours truly........:Dead:

  7. OK - I'm ordering the R&G engine cover kit and the fork protectors but I can't find the rear wheel nut protector. Any chance of a link?

  8. I don't rate the engine bars, decent frame sliders look better and provide the length required to be the most prominent point, I have R&G. Sounds like you have the lot but I go with frame sliders, fork and rear wheel bobbins, bar ends and armorfend. Barkbusters look lousy but I know some like them. If you are really manic, run about with panniers on 24x7, that provides a lot of side impact!

I also have the water pump guard, a simple fitting and could help.

  9. BarkBusters. EvoTech knobs. Leave the rear peg carriers on.

I binned mine 5 days (3 weeks ago) before I went on holidays. Slow speed spin on intersection. Another story.
The Barkies took the hit as did the rear pegs. Grazed both but totally functional. NO bodywork damage or other damage except for a fooked gear lever....and effed my fave 'Draggin' jeans :-(
Didn't even touch the crash knobs or other points.

The Barkies might look a bit "Enduro" on the MTS but after awhile you don't even notice them AND they'll prevent you killing levers and indicator/clutch cylinder assembly. Not to mention fingers.

    They are worth every penny.

  10. +1 for BarkBusters. I had a zero speed topple and they saved the lever and hand guard. The panniers got a bit scratched however the plastic moulding broke at the upper, rear mounting point - not bad just enough to allow about 5 mm of lateral movement.

I had a similar spill on my first MTS1200 and the hand guard was badly damaged which is a problem as the reservoirs mount off them and the indicators a re built into them - so they can't just be removed. Luckily I wasn't too far from home.

  11. Love the BarkBusters - awesome! Will get some of those too. My Mutley is going to be like a tank :)

  13. had a recent spill, all the protection in place did its job BUT - nothing protects the gear lever. carry a spare

  14. Armourfend over pretty much all the panels for me, makes sense with a new bike for me.

  15. Makes sense to me too. I've contacted Armourfend for a quote.
