Anyone done their SS fairing with Dzus fasteners? Some time ago, I worked out exactly what was needed and I seem to have lost the information, so it would be handy if someone could short circuit the process of having to do it all again. Thanks if you have........B*llox if you haven't. AL
Well.........Not really........... When I first looked at it, the actual components could vary; mainly the receptacles......for example, each receptacle on the sides of the lowers need to be something different... ...the bottom four for the lowers could probably be clip-on type, even though they would have to go onto the two fishplates. The rear one for the side of the lowers needs to be a blind receptacle; and I think the front one for the side might need to be a swaged receptacle. The four connecting the lowers to the nose cold possibly be clip-on type, but I wonder what the effect of the clips would be on the bare material of the lowers where the clip would sit or rub against it.....and of course those fixing holes in the lowers are already 15mm diameter. The actual 'pins' couldn't / wouldn't be right with the bale arm, as the heads would be in the fairing recesses. Then there is the question of shall they be sprung loaded and the 'pin' retaining device, and or washers under the heads etc etc. I've got the whole catalogue here but it's going to take ages to work out the required pin lengths again, because they depend on the above, in addition to the panel thicknesses.
Al, Previous keeper of my ST did it on part of the main fairing, it's easy and a great mod. Think the clip on type is what you would need for top and bottom not sure about rear and front mid level. I now use a low power electric screwdriver to remove panels for speed but have thought about this mod for my ss in the past so let me know how you get on
Nah..........It's the pin lengths I need to recall..........they were nearly all different; plus I can't rememeber which pin head type I thought was a good idea.....at the time. One of the side receptacles was this (at 15mm diameter).
Al, When I thought about this I bought a kit with different lengths etc,to work out what I needed. It was about £ 12 You can borrow it if you want
AL, give me a day and I'll do the homework for you - we're playing with this stuff at the mo so I've got the cad for it as well. We might consider this to the push in if we can find a tame machinist to tap a thread or turn a new mounting: 2600 / 2700 SERIES (TYPE 4 ) RECEPTACLE single hole mounting zinc die casting - 99R10-01A1 from Specialty Fasteners & Components however I'm currently looking at LiveLoc as quarter turns are a bit poo: Livelock Panel Fasteners but for alternative nice I'm working with these at the mo, and they work well - we stuck them in a test rig at they tore apart at 1.5kn! Ideal- and there are other companies who make this so you don't have to pay the daft prices that DT charge. Pitking Products Quick Release Clip - Push Button Release - Demon Tweeks the only thing with the above is that the head is a 30mm diameter so wouldn't sit in the cup recess of our fairings.
The 400 has got these on if you would like to have a look, on the nose and bottom of the fairings, you can just make them out on the pic
Nope.........Pin(space)Head....... Note to parents: "Cranker really must improve his reading ability 3/10"
Thanks Lumbux....Bale arm type of head on the nose......... Do they come out completely or are they retained? Is there a washer under them? Are they sprung eject type? I assume the recepticle is a clip-on type.
Thanks Sev.....I have looked at Livelock and Speciality Fasteners..........I'm not sure if the finishes and materials are equal to Dzus. Still, your thoughts will be very useful..... BTW, the Dzus blind insert I showed above is ideal at 15mm, because it will fit in that daft bit of pipe that supports the rear side fixing of the lowers......It is just forced in as far as I can tell, and the milling grips the inside of the tube.
Thanks..........very decent of you. A photo of the components would probably help a lot......saves posting stuff backwards and forwards. It would be useful to see whether there are washers under the pin heads and what type of pin and their retainers you are thinking of, plus the recepticles, of course. On our oufit, we used Dzus flush (sort of countersunk) items which were riveted to the fairing....these were the self eject type, but were retained when undone........they clipped into the spring affair which was riveted to mounting plates on the chassis. Unfortunately, it was necessary to stick a square of gaffer tape over them when they were in place because the vibration could cause them to spring undone. If we used a tighter fitting pin, the spring would distort and then sometimes the bl**dy things wouldn't come undone or the end of the pin would break.
I'd definitely rate Dzus over camloc quarter turns, so yes very wise to stick to dzus. Livelocks (Tridair) are a breed apart however, they are pure fastener porn. The receptacle has a ratcheting mechanism in it to grip the head. Stupidly expensive by comparison though. In respect to your push fit one, yes I agree, but one thing to note is that the wellnut does provide a token nod to AV damping although I'd say that was more by accident than design.
AV damping? Not on my fairing........the wellnuts in the silly pipes either side have to be wound up as much as possible, otherwise the lowers can pull off at those rear fixings.......and one even came out during a long run. The main thing with the Dzus is deciding on a washer under the head and what sort of retainer on the pin, if any......the recepticle is not such a hard thing to deal with although panel thicknesses vary. And of course, sprung eject pins would be quite good, but that involves a cup washer to retain the eject spring which makes the head stad out more.
