No - the road from via Moretonhampstead is not good for bikes. Most of the way over Dartmoor is narrow and twisty and the sheep and ponies wander across it unpredictably - hence most of it is 40mph limit. If you want to go via Tavistock take the A386 from the A30 just after Okehampton. Then go from Tavi, through Gunnislake on the A390 to Callington, then take the A388 north, back to the A30. I live in this area, and that's the way I'd go...

If you're getting into this biking thing properly - it would seem so from the frenzy of purchases - then if you have an iPhone or Android, get the RealRider app. It will track your route but also has some neat safety features, especially if riding solo.
ive just come back up from looe and tbh if its just for work id go by plane. fkn roads were clogged solid with caravans and assorted lorries etc,perishing roadworks all over and an abundance of speed cameras wherever the road looked good. mind the sun was beating so shouldnt be surprised by the amount of grockles i spose. wasnt an enjoyable trip,cornwall to notts,thats for sure.
Except you have to fly to either Exeter - which is miles away - or Newquay - which is a real pain to get to / from...

I've compiled everyone's suggestions (hopefully) and drafted the route below. I've inserted some scenic rest stops: Cowdray Park, Tidworth, Longleat, Tavistock (where I grew up) and a cheeky swim in the harbour at Porloe, which is stunning. Any tweaks/changes?
