I understand you have to listen to any advice coming from Wilf,he is a very well respected figure in the industry, But at the same time my own dealer blew his 2008R box up with a DP quickshifter, and his workshop has seen a few of the same ,these bikes have been in for repair,it's not a pit lane story. Over the last few years I've met a few serious trackday/racers running 1098R at events in Spain and its taken as fact the 2008 gearbox was weak, they blew the OE up so fitted a Nova, guys from all over the UK so not using the same dealer, I dont think people would spend that sort of money unless it was required ?, To support my statement all i can do is tell you the info on 08/09 boxes came from the owner of the shop I've used for the last 10 years without issue, that's all the proof i need , they are as well respected as MR so their opinion is good enough for me, The only place to get technical drawings for the gearboxes would be from Bologna i suppose , Cheers.
Hmm, me too. Interesting. I've heard all the same stuff too. It seems that when you push for clarity on the 'stronger' box, there isn't any. Just had mine rebuilt (08 1098R) as 3rd 4th and 5th were shagged. I'm told mine has the 'stronger' Bayliss rep fitted. Dunno... All I know right now is that its in better nick than it was and I should get out there and give it a jolly good fucking thrashing!! I also know that these 1098R's are bastard well expensive to rebuild! Hey-ho.... Donington here we come, woo hooo...
Again, there only appears to be anecdotal stories from people who have broken their gearbox using the DP Quickshifter. The actual people who rebuild the gearboxes component by component (as per MR) say there is no difference in components used between the 08/09 boxes. And MR know more about the 1098R than most having raced them extensively. So until someone can show me factual evidence highlighting the differences, I'm not buying the story. I made the comments last time in another thread that people do need to realise that the 1098R puts a huge amount of both power and torque through the box. And it's not just bigger numbers than IL4s, it's also the big power pulses generated by the big twin. Maxing them out on track, banging through the gearbox at 8-11k rpm through the crude DP Quickshifter will put more load through the gearbox than any other superbike on the market.
