If the red wire had worn its sheath through and made metal contact would you get an error code on the dash or blown fuse or just a dead bike?
360Watts....doesn't sound a lot compared to an electric fire, but If I gave you the wrong end of a 12Watt soldering Iron to hold...you'd soon drop it. Fuses are typically rated current against time also if, due to local resistance, you were only getting a 10 amp load (120Watts of heat to produce a fire) then the fuse wouldn't blow anyway. Have you ever felt how hot these wires get with just a 20Amp load...too warm to hold!! FUSES HELP PREVENT FIRES ONLY IN CERTAIN CONDITIONS. Most modern car fires (not crash related) are due to failed fuel injectors. These rarely take out the fuse as you have 4,5 or 6 of them on the same fuse. Even a fault to earth won't blow the fuse due to the resistance of the wires....or as I call them "heater elements" in this case.
AndyW... Great post.... I was going to just try and pull my sat nav wires under the tank, but I feel that a full strip down and inspection is now required. Further it will make my job really easy, albeit 10 times longer. However I need to make sure I don't have this issue.
Well worth doing Paul imho. I have commented (with photo links) to my Dealer regards this issue not having been spotted whilst they had the tank off.........but that was at the end of a rather long missive on another matter! So far they've simply ack'd my email, no comments. I think a Memorandum to Dealers from Ducati HQ is required advising them to inspect 'vulnerable' areas of the wiring harness/loom when bikes are in for service.
I've updated the 2010 ABS model wiring diagram to cover the information supplied by Boomer. As far as I know this now all correct but I will tidy it up a bit more. Link for download here. Let me know if you find any errors or inconsistencies.
