749 Smokey When Starting

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by clueless, Aug 10, 2014.

  1. Every time I start my bike I get a bit of smoke coming out of the right side of my exhaust. It clears after about 20 seconds but I'm just wondering why this happens.

I rode almost 700 miles last weekend and it didn't miss a beat and it starts first time every time.

Even if I leave it for 20 minutes I still get that puff of smoke on start up.

It's just had a full service and it runs perfect...........has anyone got any idea why this happens.

    It's an R by the way.....thanks

  2. It's bolloxed...........I'll buy it for £25.

    Smoke colour?

    Black? Blue-ish? White?

  3. stem seals maybe

  4. White.

  5. Steam / condensation..............or, do 749Rs have a coolant system?

  6. I'm with finm, it's burning something so it's either past the valve stem or the rings. The results of a compression test will point to a minor issue or something potentially more involved. My first thought is top end though. Andy

  7. Forum name might give you a clue.

  8. Bugger, could also be a small head gasket to water jacket failure. Andy

  9. If it was oil, it would be a bit blue; petrol (too much) would be black.....it's steam /condensation or a coolant leak (if it has coolant........may be able to smell it, like anti-freeze, if it is)

Loads of vehicles do it if it is steam/condensation............including my car always from the right zorst.

  10. I had this issue before it was serviced. I would have thought anything major would have been spotted.

  11. A long run on a dry day might see it stop until you get home and leave it overnight......

I noticed that mine will condensate quite a bit in damp-ish and cold weather, plus the carbon cans don't get overly hot, so the packing can get quite wet.

Most jap bikes have a small hole drilled in the lowest end of the cans and the Laser cans on mine had them until I fitted carbon sleeves instead of ally ones.

  12. Not necessarily, unless you drew the issue to the workshop staff's attention. They do run the engine up but are not necessarily looking for problems. My concern is that you see it every time you start the bike even after a short run time. Had it been a BLMC Series A engine I'd definitely say valve stems as it would have been on my old Norton Dominator. Sadly not so sure nowadays. Andy

  13. The A series engine?

    Run on Duckhams Q20-50.......?

......The quickest way to sludge the oilways up with dirty white tapioca.....

.....and the quickest way to bugger an engine.

  14. I did mention it before it was serviced.........I better ring them in the morning just to be safe.

Thank you all for you help.

  15. if it was coolant you would be needing to top it up? is it using oil?

  16. I'm going to check....

  17. oil fine, coolant fine

  18. is there a strong smell of petrol before you fire it up?

  19. yes...and when I'm riding, according to my chums. :)

  20. i was working on a theory, but 749 is injection so that rules that out. monitor coolant. is there two places to check it. expansion bottle and somewhere else?
