You don't necessarily have to trade it in. My MTS1200S Touring is just 2 years old. It's done 22,000 miles, largely trouble-free. Having tried the Skyhook model, I decided that I liked the Ohlins version better and have kept the 2012 bike. Spent the money on extending the warranty though!
Yeah, mine's out of warranty as it's 2010 (I did extend it to 3 years). One way and another, these two breakdowns have cost me almost a grand. If you add that to the cost of an intermediate and main service, new tyres, chain and sprox, I could probably have got a new one year or so ago. Oh, that thou' was WITHOUT all the parts that Ducati (fair dues to them!) supplied FOC as goodwill!! With the cost of those it would have been bankruptcy time!!
I tell you what, I was looking around M&P today and the Kawasaki Z1000SX is £9.5K brand new. A Hayabusa is £10.6. It makes a Pikes Peak Multi at £ 1 8 K look a bit bloody overpriced in my opinion, as much as I love the bike!
That was my feeling, a few years ago when I bought my Z1000SX. It was either that or a Multistrada, and the Multi was too tall and too expensive.
@AndyC_772 How did you find it? It's a lovely looking bike in the Green and I've always had a soft spot for Kwackers (my very first bike was a KE100 ) I know it's a very different proposition to a Multi but it seems like a decent bike and gets very good reviews. And at that price....
After 10 years I sold my Honda Blackbird and last year bought a new MTS S Touring. I rode 23,000 miles on the bird and the only fault was a voltage regulator. The Mutley now has 12,000 on the clock (it's much more fun!) which includes over 8,000 miles of high speed continental touring, two up with 30 kilos of luggage. The only problems have been uncommanded hazard flasher operation (ongoing) and the clutch required bleeding for some strange reason. I have to admit that, after reading everything on this forum, I get a little nervous when I set off on a new adventure. I know people usually only post when there's a problem but there seems to be a lot of them. I bet the Honda forums are really boring Kevin
@kevpix , Yeah, in fairness, my Mutley was faultless (with regular servicing and all scheduled recalls) until this problem blew up. And it was at 3.5 years old and 22K or so miles so quite a lot of use. Of that 22k probably 18K were big continental trips. I am REALLY hoping this'll be an end to the problems for another 22K miles!
I really enjoyed it. Of all the bikes I've ridden, it's the one on which I felt most immediately at home. The seat's a bit firm and if you're used to the sound of a V-twin then the noise won't do much for you, but otherwise it's a very complete and capable package. The brakes are fantastic (even the rear!), the engine is a peach, and it does everything you need a bike to do. I kept it for 3 1/2 years and just traded it in for a new Diavel - for no better reason that because I fancied a change.
Found the high speed vibes a bit tiresome. Always feels undergeared to me. Otherwise a very good bike.
Yeah, I think most Japanese 4 cylinders feel a bit undergeared. My old 'Blade does too until I get used to it again. This is especially the case after getting off a big V Twin or my old Triumph Rocket! Now THAT was an engine! :-D
UPDATE: Ok, soaked the bike last night, let it sit overnight and did 100 miles on it today. So far, so good! Keep your fingers crossed for me as tomorrow I'm through the tunnel and into France!
Hi All. So, I know Riders aren't exactly the flavor of the month around here but fair dues, they seem to have sorted my Multi. I'm about 1000 miles into my trip and have had no problems at all - all seems well. Bike has been out in cold and damp a few nights and been fine the next day. Hasn't been left to sit overnight in any biblical rainstorms yet but, fingers crossed! If I do get any more problems, I'll update. Thanks to all for their comments and help to date!
