Just watched the recording of James May's World of Cars from last Sunday, really enjoyed it, a lot a facts I did not know about Germany and Volkswagen, some humour and about cars for petrol heads. He is the best of the Top Gear presenters by far. Oh and the programme about 100 year old drivers (already covered on here) was also very good, at last one or two programmes not sport.
Didn't see the point in dropping the car. All it does is piss off the classic car people that watch it.
That car and holiday savings scheme was new to me. Utter slime... Great programme though, look forward to the next episodes.
There are insurance companies selling life insurance policies in the UK today on the basis that you must keep paying the premiums for the rest of your life, and if you miss one payment the policy is void - no refunds, no cash-in value, you lose the lot. This system appears to be based on the Nazis' KdF-Wagen scheme.
The thing with the likes of Top Gear, and to a great extent James Mays latest programme, is that they are not classed as documentaries but entertainment with a few facts thrown in. Personally I enjoyed it and like a few others I learned something new about the Nazi scams. Mind you this scam is still being used today.... How much do you pay for road tax?
Really good programme. This might be a good time to confess a real soft spot for a lot of commie cars despite their crappiness - I'd love a rear engined skoda or a Lada. On the "not crappy at all" end of the scale, I'd love a Tatra T700, bot don't have a spare £40k sitting around...
I would happily have a Lada Niva Cossack, saw one a few years ago in matt black, huge wheels etc all topped off with big red stars on doors and bonnet.
I went and looked at a Cossack with the view to buying 2 weeks ago. My brother had Ladas many years ago. Just sticking with the Marinas at present
Blimey is it?! It was my dads, and hasn't moved since he passed away five years ago. Tonight after watching the program on iplayer I fitted a battery to it and after a couple of pumps of the pedal it fired straight up and smoked like an old ns400! So I need to sort out my washer pump and jets and near side hazards and I can get the old thing to an mot and see what needs doing. The tyres are still the original stomil things it came out the showroom with. I thought most of these cars all ended up in the crusher to be honest or just rotted away. I took some pics of it in its tired state. I'll get them up when I get to a grown up 'puter
The "scrapage scheme" murdered loads of odd old cars like that... The stupid thing was it took loads of decent enough (ie working and cheap) cars off the road, and most of the money went to Malaysia !
