1199 1199s First Impressions And A Question...

  1. So today was the big day, after too-little sleep I got done with work ASAP and headed to Riders Bristol to pick up my 2013 1199S.

A short delay whilst I rearranged insurance cover to actually start today (mistakenly set it for tomorrow, numpty) and a few signatures later (literally could have been signing anything) and the keys were mine !

    First impressions in chronological order;
She's real pretty but that tail (un)tidy has to go.
    The dash is awesome.
Stock cans sound great, but not as deep as my old 1098S Termis.
No clutch clacketty clack (fine by me)
Plenty of leg room (and I'm 6ft)
Don't stall like a dick as you leave Riders.
Engine is smooth, pulls like a train.
    Wet mode is dull
Turns like a normal bike rather than a lazy Duc of old
Mirrors aren't completely useless for once
Ouch me nuts. Who designed the Teflon seat cover ?
How fast ? Better slow down...

So the bike is fantastic in most respects, as expected. And gains speed noticeably faster than a 1098.

But the one issue is the surging/hunting/snatchy fuelling on constant throttle :Arghh:. I tried all 3 modes, different engine speeds etc etc but it's not nice. As others have commented, I could just man up and grab it by scruff of the neck, then it's fine. But on the road you just can't ride like that all the time.

I'd read about the issue so demo-d a 2014 base model last weekend and it was absolutely fine. I'm going back to Riders tomorrow to ask them to check the software map status. Mine's an early 2013 model so I'm hoping there's a software update although the service record from June shows 'no updates due'.

Anyone got any comments or ideas ? I'm sure It's fixable, well I hope it is as the rest of the bike is fantastic.

  2. The 62 plate demo I rode last year was terrible. My 14 plate is loads better.

  3. Hi Rich.

My base 1199 suffered for surging at constant revs. Was all cleared up once I installed a full system along with the up-map. Iv heard fitting slip-ons with the specific up-map stops the surging too. Dyno time along with a PC would sort the problem too.

The stock seat is slippery as hell lol. I'm looking to either re-cover mine with an alcantara cover or purchase the DP after market race seat.

I'm loving my 1199. I'm hardly getting the time to use it though. The bike is still yet to cover 800 miles. Being a shade over a year old I'm starting to think do I really need to keep hold of it. I'm sure my next ride out will help change my mind lol

  4. Mine still surges with all the updates :( Particularly bad between 5-6k. Spoke to the service manager at JHP and he was saying the CATs are the issue. Set of Termis with the map will sort it.

As for that friggin seat, yeah, mine was slippery as an eel. That was one of the first upgrades on mine....seat and rearsets (those pegs are slippery little buggers too!). Next up will be some Termis!

  5. The bike looks great, congratulations.

I've just part ex'd my 2012 model for a new one and have kept my termis (and tail tidy!). They sound a lot nicer than the stock cans, kind of deeper rather than louder. I don't pick it up until sep 1st so don't know how different the new model is but I can honestly say that the surging throttle will feel much better once you've rode it for a day or two and got used to it.

I agree on the stock seat, it's an ice rink. I bought the DP racing seat and stomp grip after losing the ability to have children several times on the tank. The race one is much better, it lifts a bit at the front and it is much grippier. I haven't been balled once since getting it! I also got some pegs from Oberon as the stock ones are rubbish in the rain.

  6. mine surged but fitted termi cans and up map much smoother , fitted comfort seat much better ,

  7. I have just recently picked up the 899, with standard cans and map, it's very smooth in traffic and coasting in 1 st or 2 nd. Which was a big surprise to me. No hunting or surging. Can't understand why Ducati can't sort the 1199??

  8. Just at Riders now (another bacon sarnie). Not a lot they can do for my 1199 surging issue other than what's been suggested here (cans & upmap plus try to get used to it). However they can sell me lots of expensive carbon trinketry...

Tempted by a stock 899 seat which seems slightly better profile and material although the alcantara covering of the "race" seat is cool.

Not rained yet so haven't experienced foot peg slippage !

  9. I think this is why the 899 has been so popular and got such good reviews. Everything is a little bit more friendly and useable whereas the 1199 is a bit of a wild beast that takes some taming. Is going to be more difficult to ride fast because it's a handful and doesn't really perform until you get it by the scruff a bit. But all this is exactly the reason I love the 1199 , it might be more difficult to ride as fast as you'd go on say the BMW but it's only a small difference and it's still faster than just about anything else.

  10. You've got to love Ducati! After spending 20k on a bike they advise you to spend another £1500 to iron out a problem!.

  11. Mine surges between 4-5k
Decided to have the termis fitted ,which were part of the deal .
So booked in for next month.
I been filling up with normal UL ,I was thinking to day if the higher octane would smooths it out?
Comfort seat fitted, my first day out with it.
    Well impressed money well spent.

  12. Nope, only put Shell V-Power in mine and can confirm it still surges :(

  13. Please let me know how you get on, may need to do the same.

I tried that too but made no difference for me either.

  14. I dont think you will 'solve' the issue, it's just a characteristic of the bike. They've improved it over the first models but it's a huge bore V Twin so it's going to be pretty jumpy at low revs.

  15. A full Termi system for the 1199 I believe is about £2700 including all the pipes. So a big cost in my mind to stop the surging. Buy the end cans and go visit CJS near Bristol and see if he can make a better mapping.

  16. CJS racing in Bristol worked wonders on my bike. Zero surging, perfectly smooth in town and on/off throttle transition is unnoticeable. Also unleashed nearly 20bhp extra as a max gain and 11bhp up top. Only mods were Termi slip ons and CJS remap of stock ECU. Dyno before and after below (Termi slip ons with up map vs Termi slips with remap

  17. I dont understand the max readings on that graph? Impressive jump in torque/power but the after line just seems to slightly amplify the before line rather than smooth out the bumps and the max readings are all showing at the same rpm, which are not the maximum torque/power points??

Do you have an afr readout you could post up as well?

  18. Chris basically put a line vertically through the graph at the point at which the new map made peak power, and as a result it gave a readout at the same RPM on the before curve.

Peak power before was 182bhp, so it's gained 11bhp if you compare before and after

I don't have an AFR graph to post up but I saw it on the screen while having the tune done, and it was a long way out, mostly running very rich

  19. to me looks like an over projected dyno? 182 bhp before? I take it this is rear wheel power as well ,really don't think a std panni is putting out 182 at the back,

  20. Mine doesn't surge as such but there was massive flat spot between 4-5,500. I took it this had something to do with emissions? It's faded considerably since the dealer uploaded a new map but it's still there. Is everyone's like this? Looking at the ducati standard trace on the tech spec section of the website it would seem so.

Looking at dyno trace above that has one too but higher up. Do you notice it?
