Over in Europe doing some touring this week. Pulled in for a break on loose gravel and went to step off and BOOM. Side stand wasn't down fully and over it goes with me doing a backwards roll trying to stop it !! Grazed the LHS pannier, mirror and the pannier is now loose. Checked it once I got to the hotel and it looks like the flat plastic panel in the tail piece has broken off. The pannier still locks in place but the mating surface between the pannier and tail piece is busted. Checked the parts diagram online and it looks like a complete one piece unit too. Anyone know if that's correct or not ? I can't strip it until I get home next month. Other than that the bikes been great. Haha
Sorry to hear this Not a great lover of the side stand, I find it a pain to put it down and get it back up, but then I am Short Just wondering do you have Brash bars?
At least your not on a GS - over on UKGSer, they call out the "take me home" service when they have an issue with panniers, or at least some do! Gaffer tape, wire ties and bungees are your friends in this instance. Hard luck though, always a p155er when you do that (I have!).
:Grumpy: Bad news for you, but it sounds like it could have been far worse and as Flyer 47 said, at least it sounds like you are OK. Far easier to fix the bike than your goodself I think.....epressed:
did that a couple of months back. v.embarrassing, up shot i worry less about damaging it when taking it out now. first blood.
Yes, I have done this myself and it is a complete one piece unit. The little flat plastic panels which the pannier tongues butt up to are fragile and poorly supported. They easily break off, and you have to replace the whole component. Don't think you can glue the broken bits back in place - this is not feasible. For the moment, the panniers won't fall off, just rattle about a bit. It would be better to wrap some kind of strap around them for security, until you can fix the problem properly. It's just a bit of bad design.
Certainly felt like it. One minute I'm about to step off the bike and the next I'm doing a backward roll after being catapulted off the damn thing trying to stop it going over!! Over in seconds. Damn it's a heavy beast when loaded and trying to get it back up !!

Cheers Pete. Thought as much looking at the pictures. Looks like a full strip down to replace it too !! A winter project I think to keep me busy. The crash bars have a little mark so they certainly done their job. A little disappointed to be honest for such a little drop that these have completely snapped. But the roads are amazing so sure I'll forget all about this mishap today. Got the next 2 days doing route de grande alps so I'll be back smiling soon.
Same thing happened to me a couple of years back trying to get off the Blade following a rather long day, legs simply didn't work like I thought they would and didn't kick the stand down far enough, next thing I'm lying there in a Belgium petrol station with the bike on my leg laughing like a demented fool..... I think I was that pissed off it was cry or laugh, luckily the latter came out. Feel for you bud but as others have said at least you're ok
Sorry to hear - happened to me and it's a real bummer. That said, you're ok and the bike will fix so here's to staying onwards and upwards as they say....!
If the pannier is goosed I'd do the following. Find a hardware store buy a 'U' shaped kitchen handle or similar, along with some silicone sealer and a couple of washers and attach it to the bottom of the pannier. I'd also get some sort of long (ish) luggage strap. The handle will act a guide to stop the strap from moving across the smooth pannier thus keeping it secure. The strap can be secured over the saddle to the other side of the bike to keep it from wobbling around. The two holes can be fixed when you get home and because they are at the bottom they will be out of sight.
Sorry to hear that. Has it broken the inner bit off,or just bent it ? Either way, it is repairable if You keep the bits. For now as Pete says it won't fall off, just rattle a bit. To repair it, you put it back in place, and bond a piece of alloy plate to the rear of it to strengthen it. I saw this posted on the us forum a few years back.
