Thinking about the repair of my now damaged 750ss 1994, and have come across this company's pattern fairing panels, e.g. this one . Wondering how well it will match the original, i.e. shape, weight, dimensions, thickness of panel, fit etc. Has anyone had need to use one of their replica fairing bits? Other parts damaged in the spill are, clip-on, clutch lever, front and rear indicators, gear lever and side stand; you get the picture! Any advice on where to go for 2nd hand / new bits, would be gratefully received!
I have used a few sets of Ricambi Weiss fairings for 748 track bikes and I found them to be pretty decent for the money. They fit well enough and whilst they could be a bit thicker they are good enough to use on the road if they are prepared and painted properly.
IMO try to find secondhand OEM stuff. I have a full fairing which is OEM and it fits generally pretty well. I also have a half fairing......one side is OEM and it fits the OEM nose OK, but the 'pattern' other side is probably Ricambi and the fit is not brilliant, although just about acceptable. In addition I have the 'scared monkey' twin headlight nose (possibly Powerbronze, but maybe summat else)....again it fits both half and full fairings, but I wouldn't say it is a brilliant fit to either of them. Some of the stuff out there isn't glassfibre either.........it's some sort of plastic (the type of plastic that sod all will stick to it).
korinthias, These guys did a fairing but just looked and can't see on web site, may be out of stock give them a call. Maybe the existing panel could be salvaged? as you can see, the indicator area has ground down and eventually sheared at the narrowest point (top corner). Then just generally a load of scrapes and gouges. Apologies for poor quality image, but bikes up against a wall and I can't move it!
Thanks Gaz, both of those look promising. Been scouring eBay, but somehow managed to miss the complete fairing. Perhaps I'll see if they do individual panels...
Think I'm going to investigate making a claim on the insurance (Carole Nash, fully comp). If they want to write it off, I'll say no and do it myself. I've done paintwork before on the old British bikes I've had, but the quality of paint on this is of a different order...

Saw those – useful to know... I think they're the half-fairing panels, but from what Gaz says, they may still do the 'full' ones too... I'll report back, but could be a bit later till I get this wretched cast off my arm!
Thats repairable with care, have just done my sons YZF750 which he dropped on Windy corner, right hand middle and upper fairings were in pieces, you probably have to mold a new section then graft it in, use blue foam block to get the shape right, lay it up with g/f to make a male mold. then lay up glass or carbon cloth over it. Breaks/cracks scrapes easily fixed, recommend strongly Terasil 9225 two part polyurethane adhesive , pricy but brilliant for plastics, car repair guys use it to repair bumpers. Biggest single problem I have had with older bikes is getting the graphics to match...it's usually all or nothing to get both sides the same. Image Works are pretty good though. If you're stuck and you get it to me I'll put it back together..... Mike
That's a kind offer – thanks. As I said earlier, I'm thinking about the insurance route, but if I don't go that way I might take you up on that; on proper terms of course!
No problem, can paint it as well, when I did my tank the original red had faded slightly so had to get it matched, half litre of two pack not that expensive...Mike
K - I would have a word with Geoff Baines @ Baines Racing [http://www.bainesracing.co.uk/contact-us.html]. He has quite a few new and used spares for that era. But in particular I had my SS fairings repaired and resprayed via Baines by a very good guy he uses locally, after I dropped the bike at Silverstone. I think Ricambi are good for trackday replacement fairings etc, but in your shoes I'd either be looking for a repair or waiting patiently on eBay for decent s/h. Your original shots of the bike are fantastic and it'd be great to get her back in that condition.
I would definitely like to get back to square-one with it if I can. I see these models as future classics and natural successors to the bevel twins, and as such worth preserving! In the six weeks or so that I've had it I really got attached to it! Talked to the insurers/brokers informally about making a claim, and they say that if it got written-off, category C or D (repairable), I would have the option to 'buy it back'. As I understand, they would pay out the value of the bike minus 20%'ish (the buy-back), I could then put the money into getting the bike back into shape and on the road again. There's a risk it would be deemed unrepairable, but I think the damage is mostly components and cosmetic. It just slid along the road –it didn't hit anything!
When an insurance company deems a vehicle 'unrepairable', it is probably preceded by 'economically'. That means the cost of new parts and labour would push it over the top of a sensible repair cost but not necessarily be a 'write off' wreck as such. I guess an assessor may say that your bike is uneconomically repairable......in fact nearly all the SSs would be economically unrepairable when compaired with what the guide values are....... EG, a brand new front wheel at £600 and a new tank at about the same or more, would be enough to make it uneconomical. If I were you, why not approach them about repairing it yourself and using good quality secondhand or pattern parts; see if they would contribute to the cost. Some will, some won't.
That fairing looks repairable to me, not much diffrent to when I got my 750. Have a go yourself at the repair, it will cost you a tenner for a fiberglass kit, but the learning experience will be priceless. If you cock it up you can always buy a second hand one
Bike colours for paint and Image works do great graphics. I used fibreglass kit and filler with very good results
