hi guys, new here but hopefully some more like minded people Ive just bought a 1199s for a new track bike which i rode for the first time at croft yesterday. id come from an R6 race bike so it was always going to be a very different experience. first impressions where the bike was light and good in quick changes of direction, but the bike was hard to get stopped and turn into the corners, and would come out to low a revs and bog down. I played with the EBC system and found in race hi to turn EBC off give me the maximum engine braking assisted a lot and provided more braking power, the brakes have good initial bite but then lack power and found i was dragging them to deep into the turns. as the day got on i was getting more used to the bike and got down to a 1.32min lap which is only 1sec away from my best on the r6. to move forward with the bike I'm planning the following: ditch the OE spec supercorsas (now shredded after 5 sessions), and fit slicks - sharper profile will hopefully help hold its line better and better grip. i will go for pirelli superbike slicks fit a race spec pad to the OE callipers and bleed with some new fluid to hopefully increase the progression on the brakes. what do people recommend? gearing whats the best proposals for gearing, i have read even ducati lowered the gearing on the latest bikes, and is it worth fitting a quick change sprocket carrier at the same time. i will only ever ride on track so will be going 520 pitch at the same time. im going to get a set of race fairings now im happy im going to keep it and will take the road kit off to keep mint, im going to go for CRC fairings as always had good reviews, but what others have people used? and for the next outing im going to start to play with the suspension, as need a C spanner for the rear shock so i can dial the correct sag into the bike and then work on the compression and rebound from there well sorry for the 1st long post but hopefully others out there tracking them can help? and share their experiences and best mods cheers Andy
Welcome, I have a BMW S1K track bike and my thoughts are similar after a couple of track days on the Panigale (R). Turns quick, feels light but brakes fade. Will replace pads with dual carbon ones once done. Fitted superbike pro slicks (hard but good longevity) Engine feels "gutless" compared to BMW however laptimes at the end of the day were the same as the well sorted BMW and speed on straight was same so difficult to support the "gutless" comment. I think it's down to being 100% throttle more of the time on the Pani than the BMW which needs to be closed back regularly (probably down to the nature of my local track). Suspension adjustment required as ground clearance (for me at my local track) is a slight issue, I've scraped the Termi exhaust cover and screws on the RH side. Gearing I can't comment as I haven't altered yet but it will be track dependant. Quick change sprocket is on my list. Regarding fairings. Ducati do a full race fairing kit for around £500 (fairings and seat but no belly pan). I'm positive it's the same plastics as the bike comes with just not painted. In the kit you also get the "R" mirror blanking plates and the fairing extension parts for your hands. Also the kit includes blanking plugs for all lights and a "dummy" black plastic headlight and tail light. A bargain in my opinion. I have a set at the painters as I write. The Panigale seems to work very well, the power and handling are well matched and I feel like I'm part of the bike. A fast lap is effortless but on the BMW I always feel like I'm a bit of a passenger and a fast lap is never without a bit of drama. But all this may change on a different track, the problems I have with the BMW go away at a larger track whereas on a bigger track problems with the Panigale may appear. Regards Davy
hi davy, cheers for the replay Ive been advised to go for Z04 brembo pads so Im going to get a set ordered, let me know if you want a price as might get discount from bike torque racing if buy a few sets together. have you got more details on the fairings? be great to see some pics, Ive just priced by crc race fairings which are £615 delivered but believed to be the best on the market bar carbon ones, come with front fairing belly pan, and seat unit for gearing im going to go -1+2 520 renthal superlight conversion but need to get some prices
Fairings are in Ducati Catalogue, you only need the bellypan if racing but Ducati will supply, I think its £300 for the bellypan alone. I cant supply pics as they are at painters but as I say I believe they are the same as standard, just not painted. They are made of the bendy plastic stuff, not fibreglass or carbon and fit perfectly. I use SBS DC on the BMW so I'll be going with them, but thanks for the offer. Cheers Davy
Subscribing, nice to see more people on the UK forum tracking About to pick up a new one so should be able to comment on the gearing changes after the 2012 1199s I traded in. Surprised to hear about brake fade as they are the best brakes I've experienced but I guess I've not been on track enough to really dial into the bike and brake hard enough to fade them. Second on the Ducati supplied polyurethane track fairings, same price as aftermarket fibreglass ones so you can't go wrong and they dont explode!
-1 front is always a great start Race fluid with proper race pads My view on tyres having done several, but not loads, of tracktime on slicks a gsxr1000 and 848 at mid/front fast group trackday pace (not top club racers) Only problem with slicks are you have to have a second set of wheels, but imo last better than SC and if track only worth the investment. Depending how quick you are, and any availability, the BSB slicks are very good but KR dunlops mad grippy. The diablo pro ones lack outright grip but last really well, but if you are front fast group I'd get stickier rubber. The SC rubber seems stickier
Well I'm skint lol but sorted some upgrades Braking- I was going to order z04 pads but they are £100 per caliper so £200 for the fronts only, I was looking at rc brembo carbon but they are poor warm up , so went with sc sintered pads at £100 for the front as used them with good results in hpk calipers before Gearing - I've opted for the afam quick change carrier and ordered a 520 race chain and sprocket kit, went for 42 tooth rear and 14 and 15 tooth front, I might try a 41 tooth rear later on Fairings- I've gone for a full crc fairing kit with tall screen Exhaust- full term system with a bmc race air filter So got lots to do over the next 3 weeks before my bike is shipped off to Portugal as we are going to portimao for a track day late September with hot trax
My mate will be there (actually a few will!) with his family, not sure if he is taking his 996 race bike or the tuono he has just nought and being delivered 1st Sept
I've got a few pairs of sc1 Pirelli superbike slicks which are barely scrubbed from a local race team so will take a few sets away, I've ran them before but hopefully will not screw up the traction control with a higher profile rear, but I'll drop traction setting down to 1 anyway What I need to sort now if how you can remove the side stand ect with no errors
I've seen state side that you can get a plug connector which must bridge the connection so fools it to think the stand up which is a tidy solution, and means the stand can go back on if put it back on the road
Davy, I have some SBS Carbon pads for a BMW S1000R for sale that I bought in error. If you're interested let me know.
I ordered the Ducati track fairings from Moto Rapido, they're arriving tomorrow. The full set costs a few quid over £500. Bargain IMO.
Hi and welcome. You`ll need just a small magnet for the sidestand switch as it is a Hall type sensor. Less than £1 from your local dealer. Best gearing i`ve found has been a 41t rear with a 106 link chain and the stock front. SBS Carbon pads have worked well in mine and there have been good review of the Z04 brembo`s too. Keep us posted
I got a kit of Ducati Coventry race department, comes with a sensor and the spacers to fix the mounting plate back once the side stand has been removed I'm going to try 41 /15 in 520 first and see how I get on got a 14 front as well to try Currently fitting the fairings this week and then got to tackle the exhaust, gearing and brakes all before the 18th when the bikes get shipped off
Has anyone got any ideas of parts that can be stripped off when covering a 1199 to a race bike. I had removed the ais system and installed smog block offs on previous bikes, but heard bad comments on the 1199 I'm sure I read someone here about a charcoal canister that can be removed? Obviously stand, lights, horn have already been removed poss will strip the fan when I install the exhaust system But any I for appreciated
