I've been looking into getting some crash protection for my 1098, mainly as Im taking it on the track alot. Ive been starting to look at engines cases first, but the plan is to get splindle protectors and some aero mushrooms, which i'll fit through some Chinese bodywork. On the cases front the choices seem to be R&G or GB Racing Ducati Ducati 848 Engine Cover Set EC-848-2008-SET-GBR - GB Racing Motorcycle Crash Protection - These appear to be around £250, or there's Engine Case Cover Kit For Ducati 1098 and 1198 (including S) Which tip the scale around the £100 mark. Cost wise its a bit of a no brainer, but I'm open to opinions/suggestions/donations :tongue:

I use speedymoto under fairing crash bobbins. Have a word with Nelly at Cornerspeed, I think he deals with them. The advantage of under fairing bungs is they won't dig in and flip the bike if you slide off but the disadvantage is you will sacrifice your fairings if you go down but the important stuff will be protected. As mentioned, R&G are very good. Also, some front spindle bobbins. Other than that, some use fuel tank protectors and rear spindle bobbins but I don't. I'd recommend even cheaper fairings if you're worried. I've had a few sets from Ricambi-Weiss; DR34 FAIRING BODYWORK ( RACE ) DUCATI 1098 TRACKDAY | eBay At £128, you can afford to ruin a set!
I used to have GB Racing kit on Triumph Daytona... tested once, luckily at very low speed - did the job very well
Agree with iceman on this one, had GB racing covers on my 675, Gixer 750 and R1 never had to test them but for superb quality, fit and looks they are second to none

Be careful with anything that bolts onto the frame directly as I've seen frames split when a crash bung digs in, thus I never ran anything and relied on case protectors and spindle protectors only.
Has anyone got these? Crash Bobbins Ducati 1098/1198 07-11 Carbon protectors frame sliders mushrooms 4250429119432 | eBay They seem to be a bit cheap but I like that they attach to the frame in two places therefore spreading the force acting on the frame upon impact.
Here's the R&G under panel ones that don't dig in if you fall off. Ducati 1098/1198/848 - Underbody Crash Protectors- UCP0003BL At least your frame and engine will be protected.
This is the type of mount that splits the frame as long as they don't dig in you'd be ok, seen it a few times at JHP now and a new frame is needed
Matt, just opened the box and they are Aero, part number CP0196BL. A quick Google will give you some photos and these are brand new, still in the box. I bought them for my 1098 which I bent before I could fit them. The RRP seems to be £175 or so and I am open to offers. I also found some DP carbon heel guards and a DP carbon exhaust guard if you are interested. If not I will put them all in the classified section a little later. regards Mark 07802 535 717
Where it bolts the crash bung can bend the tube it bolts to cannot take the stress and ovals eventually it splits and breaks the weld, you also have the additional issue if it's using the engine mount the rod bends making it near impossible to remove, had the bent rod on my DD bike and I've seen 2-3 frames scrapped at JHP where this weld splits. Maybe not so much of an issue with the under fairing type but I'd have thought the point of crash bungs was to save the bodywork anyway.
Ah I see! You were talking about standard crash bungs! Yes, As I made clear, these are under fairing bungs and are designed to avoid the very issues you mentioned. The purpose of them is to protect the frame and motor but to sacrifice the fairing, again, as mentioned, £128 for a 1098 track fairing.... that's cheaper than the bungs themselves, certainly not worth protecting LOL.
