A big fat 440 BHP diet which held the British Land Speed Record for 12 years  - it was Jack Frosts of Holeshot Racing fame.
Well, I reckon that's the Venn Diagramme way of looking at the question. It's all just marketing labels really, isn't it? Terms might change over time. My 851 had Superbike written on it, but now I suppose an 899 is a sort of Supersports on steroids despite being considerably more powerful. No, I don't know why it keeps repeating my superb diagramme either. I didn't think it was that good.
In 1969 there was introduced a whole clutch of bikes (Norton Commando, Triumph Trident, Honda CB750, BMW R75/5, and soon Laverda, MotoGuzzi, & MV) collectively known as Superbikes at the time, and all of them 750s. They were a real step up from the mid-1960s when there definitely were no Superbikes. There have been Superbikes ever since, but the bar has been raised many times over.
The word 'super' is shite. Relates to, Superman, Superwoman, Superdry, Supervalu, Superdooper, and just Super. So thankfully the 848 is not 'super'. Super!
I still get confused about the whole thing - I was only reading about it the other day in the Sportsmarket
D'you know what my bike is..? It's a 'bike'. That's all. No silly labels, no pet name, no pub bragging, just a bike. I love my bike, even though it's a pile of shite. My last proper fast bike was called 'the bike' too. Funny old world.
I'd love to know how many of these label-seekers have ridden their bikes absolutely flat out - nothing more to give. I've only ever done it once, on a K7 GSXR...that I borrowed...
both my 1198 and 916 have been to the stop. so has every vehicle I've ever owned. got 77 out of my camper van, down a long hill on a21 dual carriageway section.
