Rounded Off Allen Bolt - How To Get It Out?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by MrAliT, Sep 24, 2014.

  1. you sure you have the impact set to undo?.
ive watched a chap trying to undo a bolt with one and he actually had it on do-up setting.:D

if its on undo setting then you need a bigger hammer..:upyeah:

  2. Weld a nut on the end of the pin, where the slot is, unscrew the pin with a spanner, then cut the nut off. Use an allen key to remove the rest.

  3. drill the head off. you'll be able to take the caliper off leaving 5-8mm of stud showing to get mole grips on.

  4. yep was set to undo. The torx bit just mashed the recess more.

Tried flatting off either side of the exposed pin with the dremel. I can get the mole grips on there but I have a feeling the pin is twisting rather than it unding the thread....its certainly making a mess of the pin and I dont want to snap it off.

Id ther any reason I cant drill down into the head with a pillar drill?

  5. Nope, but you have to wonder if the underside of the head is doing the clamping, or is the thread corroded into the caliper body.

If it's the latter, drilling the head off won't help.

  6. assuming its the latter, what are my options?

  7. If you are getting nowhere, and starting to risk damaging the caliper, it could be worth resorting to contacting these people: Brake Caliper Rebuilds

I'll bet they get some scabby old calipers sent to them for exchange refurbishment.... and I doubt they are often defeated by the pad retaining pins/bolts.

  8. Soon your going to report that it is out, so don't worry ;)

Last resort will be to drill it to the core size of the thread - accurately, then tweak the remainder of the threads out. It's so easy giving advice but harder when your doing it and nothings working!

  11. I felt your pain and the sigh of relief when it moved, you were quite vocal with excitement too, even though no one was there to hear you, I was ;)

  12. I was over joyed when it spun out......then stuck in the hole because the pin had been squashed!

  13. He got it out with a bolt extractor, does that make him a fool along with PingPing ;)

  14. im afraid i was running out of ideas till he did so it was worth a try and indeed worked.

tbh my next idea involved nitro glycerine so just as well really..;)

  15. Pretty strong language there @Mr.R. I'm delighted that you've never had to use one in your 45 years experience.

Thanks to everyone on this thread for their suggestions and encouragement. I now have a whole new approach to getting out stuck fasteners!

  17. Heat may be the only way now even though you don't want it. Re-painting is easy. Gentle blowtorch on the ally around the bolt whilst trying to move it with grips. Hold it in a vice with wood blocks to protect it.
