On my recent Alps trip I dropped my bike after trying to pull away in 3rd gear.....stalled...and over she went The damage wasn't too bad, a scraped right hand side pannier, snapped right hand side hand guard and the right hand side tail section where the pannier slots into. When I got home I went to local dealer to get the new bits I needed, I also wanted a new left hand side hand guard as it was scratched and discoloured. I can live with the pannier being scrapped and the tail section was £100 bit expensive but needed to be replaced. I then asked for the 2 new hand guards and explained that I didn't need the indicator lenses as they were both fine. The dealer then explained that the right hand side guard only comes with the indicator and cost £68 but he said he ordered a left hand side guard the other day for a 2012 model and that can be purchased without the indicator costing £16, he couldn't guarantee that it would fit my 2010 model as the part # was different, again if i had to purchase one for a 2010 it would have to bought with an indicator.......WHY? Good news is the 2012 guard fits, bad news is I feel £50 lighter in the wallet after having to buy the right hand indicator with the guard something that I didn't need or want Could anyone exlpain to me why Dave
Ducati don't really make any money. I mean, you wouldn't invest your pension fund in it. So if you are paying over the odds for bits, you're probably helping the MotoGP bike fail to make any impression in racing. Sorry. Yes it is a rip-off, but top branded goods always cost over the odds: it's the emotional value of the brand you are coughing up for. What were you doing trying to pull away in 3rd??
we did 720 miles in 1 day and i was 6 miles from the digs when my sat nav said take the first exit....which was a car park lol, just tired mate
A mirror for a 749 with indicator is around 110 of your hard earned pounds so your guard & indi is cheap. I think Jap parts are silly expensive. Ever had a Honda? Daft expensive! Theres always ebay.
I bought my Vox AC30 amp for about 600 quid last year. All valve, it's an icon of British guitar sound. I mean, it's a class amp. What's that got to do with the price of muesli? Nothing. But just shows how ludicrously expensive and poor value for money bike and car bits are. £100 for a mirror? A mirror in a bit of plastic? It really just is taking the piss. Incidentally, I have a yellow 749 RHS mirror lying around which is no use to me (the only thing that survives from my 749) if anyone desperately needs it.
I just don't understand why Ducati made the guard and indicator 2 separate parts, and by all accounts use to sell them separately but for some reason now say you have to buy the 2 parts together..... doesn't make sense
Originally here in the states they sold the led and the guard seperately, but not anymore. The stock handguards are very fragile. I removed them and went to BarkBusters and DP mirrors with the integrated turn siganals.
Dave sorry to hear about your mishap! If you recall a few weeks ago I lost my left pannier! I still have the right side in my shed! Ducati want around £380 for a new one with the red panel! Now that is a rip off!
That is a rip-off. But how much is a fairing panel? A pannier is essentially an ABS box so you'd imagine it would be at least as expensive, in the mad world of auto parts.
Knightrider, yes they did sell them separately. I bought my Multi in May '10 and one week later my wife knocked it off the stand and broke one of the handguards. It cost me £8 to replace. I then think Ducati caught on to the fact that these would get broken regularly and hence the price increase. The later guards are sightly different but do fit, they have just changed the shape to add more plastic around the bolt hole. It's not the only Ducati rip off, try buying original front pads, they cost about £68 per side so a total of £136 they are just Brembo in a Ducati box. If you buy Brembo from aftermarket supplier they are about £28 per set so saving £80........ or a cardboard box with Ducati printed on it for £80. Whilst I appreciate that these companies have to make a profit I think that their prices are a bit strong. Same problem with a new battery, I think I was quoted about £120 from Ducati dealer same battery, Yusua, from MDS batteries £60 (google them they sell virtually any battery your heart desires).
Its a book keeping thing for the build of the bike. The grab rail and light each have their own part number. when their fitted at the factory, you can either take the two items out of their boxes, or alternatively take one that's been put together (an assembly) already and bolt it to the bike in one hit. The assembly therefore needs its own part number in order to identify it. What you might find is that in the later model year, they built the bike with the assembly - and so from a parts point of view its easier just to sell that. Look at it simply like folders on your pooter. You got two files (the light and the handle) for argument sakes. you stick them each into a folder (the assembly) which has its own name or number. Also bear in mind that you're paying for the guarantee and warranty on that item. Due diligence - if that part fails due to their negligence you can sue and have come back because the bike is guaranteed as a whole. the same part is sold in isolation by the independent. Something worth noting and little known... if a vehicle has an issue which is a known fault - it doesn't matter how many times it fails or how old the vehicle is, it must be replaced at cost by the dealer/ manufacturer. All this out of warranty nonsense doesn't wash in that respect. Still stupid priced for any auto spares whatever the reasons, and yes, Honda just take the biscuit on this one!
I got caught on this one - snapped a hand guard loading onto a trailer in 2010 and changed the part for around £10? Dropped the bike in 2011 and got caught for the higher priced full unit, even though the indicator was ok - invested in a set of Barkbusters after that (they are pretty good against the mirrors on small vans that try to stop you filtering).
There are parts suppliers who specialise in selling a small range of a few dozen bits for each model of bike (or car). They stock just the best selling items, i.e. service parts which wear out (chains, sprockets, filters, brake pads), bodywork which is damaged in minor spills (mirrors, guards, pegs, levers), and exhausts. That way they can knock them out really cheap. Bike & car manufacturers have to stock every OEM part for every recent model down to the last clip and screw, including bits which rarely sell. Thousands of parts sit in stockrooms for years. That way, they have to charge high prices or lose money. I do not criticise the parts suppliers nor the manufacturers - these are just facts of life.
What annoys me is when a bike is designed in such a way that you have to replace a huge part of the bike when damage is only done to a little bit viz the "tea tray" and indicators on a 696 Monster. That smacks to me of Ducati deliberately designing a bike in such a way that you have to spend a lot more on parts than would be strictly necessary. The tea tray (the bit that a tail tidy removes) has the rear indicators moulded into it. It's all too easy to kick a rear indicator when mounting or dismounting the bike and knock it off. (Myriad are the tales of such klutzishness on the UKMOC forum - it's not just me). You can't just replace the indicator - you have to replace the whole tea tray assembly. Hence my left hand rear indicator has been araldited back on twice, and was lashed on with insulating tape for most of WDW and the ride home. Better (more customer focused) design would have the indicators as separate units, that could be replaced individually.
without sounding obvious you will always pay though the nose with a dealer, as all dealers are used to dealing with weekend numptys who do not own a spanner the best bet is to go on line and find the parts and fit them yourself
I dropped my 2010 multi in the picos couple of months ago, same thing rh handguard and scratched the pannier lid . Handguard was £16 and didn't need the indicator, can't remember the exact price of the lid but was just over £50 but didn't include the red inlay as that was ok . Got the bits from snells Alton was surprised at the price thought it would be more!
